DURHAM, N.H - The University of New Hampshire women's cross country team finished second in its season-opening race against UMass Lowell on Saturday afternoon on the UNH campus.
Graduate student Michaella Conery (Concord, N.H.) led the way for the Wildcats, placing fifth with a new personal record of 17:41.48.
"We were really happy to get a meet in," said Head Coach Rob Hoppler. "We are very appreciative of all the work that everybody did in the athletic department to allow us to race and it's a good starting point. The women ran well and we are looking forward to the next month of training to see how good we can get. I was very happy the way we ran as a team and having five finishers under 18 minutes."
New Hampshire also placed the next four runners from sixth to ninth place with junior Lauren Dean (Gilmanton Iron Works, N.H.; 17:45.19), junior Nicole Yeomans (Foxborough, Mass.; 17:46.27), senior Cayla Barretto (Woburn, Mass.; 17:52.23) and freshman Elizabeth Martell (Essex Junction, Vt.; 17:55.73) with solid showings.
The 5k race (3.11 miles) ran very fast on the day, was run around the UNH athletic fields and on the streets of Durham, as opposed to its traditional race through College Woods.
UMass Lowell had the top four finishers in the race, led by Kaley Richards, who won the race with a time of 17:03.42.
The Wildcats return to action on Saturday, February 13 in a race against Vermont and Binghamton, which begins at 1 p.m. on the UNH campus.
