Johnson, Martinez Highlight America East Annual Awards
Redshirt freshman Nick Johnson was selected Rookie of the Year and junior Jayden Martinez was voted to the All-Conference First Team to highlight six awards bestowed the UNH men's basketball team by America East on Feb. 25
Johnson was joined on the All-Rookie Team by Blondeau Tchoukuiegno, another redshirt freshman. Junior Nick Guadarrama was named to the All-Conference Second Team, and grad student Chris Lester was an All-Academic Team selection for the second consecutive year.
The UNH Pod
UNH, as the No. 3 seed of the 2021 Hercules Tires America East Men's Basketball Playoffs, is hosting one of two pods this weekend. With No. 10 seed Maine opting out, the Wildcats receive a bye into the quarterfinals.
Sixth-seeded UMass Lowell (8-11, 7-8 AE) and seventh-seeded Stony Brook University (9-13, 7-9) are also in the UNH Pod and tip off Feb. 27 in Lundholm Gym. The winner advances to play New Hampshire on Feb. 28. Start time on both days is 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
We're #3
The No. 3 seed is the highest for New Hampshire since 1995, when the Wildcats were the second seed. UNH has never been seeded No. 3 in the conference tournament (dating back to the 1980 ECAC NAC tourney).
The State of New Hampshire
UNH takes a 10-8 overall record, including 9-6 in America East and 5-5 at home (4-4 against conference teams at home), into the 2021 Hercules Tires America East Men's Basketball Playoffs.
The Wildcats ended the regular season with a 69-67 win at UMass Lowell on Feb. 20 to secure the No. 3 seed.
New Hampshire enters postseason play on a two-game winning streak; prior to the aforementioned regular-season finale, the 'Cats defeated those River Hawks, 74-63, at Lundholm Gym on Feb. 6.
All three of UNH's February games have been against UMass Lowell. The River Hawks won the first meeting, 74-69, in Durham on Feb. 5.
UNH won three of the last four regular-season games and went 6-4 in the last 10.
This is the 16th season as UNH head coach for Bill Herrion, who has the most wins in program history with 197. He was honored as the 2019-20 America East Coach of the Year by Hoops HD.
How We Got Here
UNH entered the final weekend of the regular season tied with Hartford for third place in the America East standings and could have finished anywhere from third through sixth in the seedings.
With Hartford idle, the Wildcats controlled their own destiny with one game at UMass Lowell -- earn the third seed and host a playoff pod with a win. A loss would have sent the 'Cats on the road for the playoff pod as either the fifth or sixth seed, depending on outcomes of other conference games.
New Hampshire secured the No. 3 seed with a 69-67 against the River Hawks at Costello Athletic Center.
Where Do We Go From Here?
The winner of the UNH Pod advances to the March 6 semifinals. The lowest remaining seed of the two pod winners travels to play top-seeded UMBC (14-5, 10-4 AE). The other pod winner travels to play second seed Vermont (10-4, 10-4 AE).
