DANBURY, Conn. – Senior captain Bloem van den Brekel (Eindhoven, Netherlands) of the University of New Hampshire field hockey team has been named to the 2021 Division I Field Hockey All-ECAC Team.
van den Brekel's other accolades in 2021 include NFHCA All-America Third Team, NFHCA Northeast Region First Team and NFHCA Senior Team, as well the America East Defensive Player of the Year and All-Conference First Team.
She is one of only 11 players – and 1 of 3 defenders – named to the Division I Field Hockey All-ECAC Team.
In addition to anchoring UNH's defensive unit – including the penalty corner unit – van den Brekel pushed upfield to join the Wildcats' attack and was an integral part of the offensive penalty corner. She made those contributions from one end line to the other while playing 1,172 of a possible 1,178 minutes.
van den Brekel finished atop the Wildcats' leaderboard in goals (nine), game-winning goals (four), points (19) and shots (65). With those numbers in 19 games (all starts), she ranked second in America East in shots on goal per game (2.58), fifth in shots per game (3.63), ninth in goals and goals per game (0.47), and tied for fourth in game-winning goals.
van den Brekel recorded 11 points (five goals, one assist) during UNH's four-game winning streak that spanned Oct. 17-29 with a goal in all four games. She scored both the game-tying and game-winning goals in the Wildcats' overtime win against Columbia University during that stretch. Earlier in the season, she also scored an overtime game winner at Bryant University, and scored a goal in consecutive games against Cal and UC Davis.
In her UNH career, van den Brekel started all 84 games played with 29 goals and 17 assists for 75 points.
The ECAC (Eastern College Athletic Conference) is an 82-year old organization with more than 200 member schools across all three NCAA Divisions (I, II and III).
