Woods Records Career-High 15 Saves in 4-2 Loss to Maine

DURHAM, N.H. – Junior Jemma Woods (Frimley, England) recorded a career high 15 saves, but the University of New Hampshire field hockey team was defeated 4-2 by the University of Maine in Sunday afternoon's regular-season finale at Memorial Field.
Woods made nine of her saves in the second half and that included five in the fourth quarter. Maine goalie Mia Borley was credited with one save.
Junior Molly McAteer (Annapolis, Md.) finished with a goal and a defensive save. Senior Tia Raspante (Sandwich, Mass.) scored UNH's other goal.
Maine had four different goal scorers and Brooke Sulinski tallied two assists.
UNH, which entered the game on a four-game winning streak, ends the regular season at 7-11 overall and 3-5 in America East. The Wildcats are the No. 5 seed and will play fourth-seeded Cal in an America East first round game on Nov. 6.
Maine improved to 13-6, 7-1. The Black Bears are the conference No. 1 seed and host of the entire tournament (Nov. 4-7).
FIRST QUARTER
- Maine outscored UNH 2-0 with a 7-1 shot advantage (4-0 on goal) in the opening 15 minutes.
- The first shot of game was by senior captain Bloem van den Brekel (Eindhoven, Netherlands) in the second minute, but it went wide left of the cage.
- Poppy Lambert, with the assist by Madisyn Hartley, gave the Black Bears a 1-0 lead at 5:18.
- Woods stopped both the first shot and attempt off the rebound by Brooke Sulinski, but Sydney Meader scored on the next rebound to extend the advantage to 2-0 at 7:48.
- Sulinski finished the first quarter with three shots.
SECOND QUARTER
- Maine recorded an 8-1 shot advantage and scored the only goal of the second quarter.
- The Black Bears controlled possession the opening 2:20 of the quarter but did not generate a shot in that span.
- Chloe Walton scored off a rebound – Woods stopped the initial shot by Poppy Lambers – to increase the lead to 3-0 at 23:07.
- Senior Finn Caron (Hampton, N.H.) sent a shot wide left in the 26th minute.
- Woods made one more save the remainder of the half to keep the margin at three goals.
THIRD QUARTER
- UNH outscored the visitors 2-0 in the third quarter to close within 3-2.
- The 'Cats converted their second penalty corner of the game into a goal at 31:29. The battery of junior Jaiden Wittel (Stroudsburg, Pa.) and senior captain Isabelle Danahy (Chelmsford, Mass.) set up the direct shot and goal by McAteer.
- New Hampshire answered with another goal – this time junior Ava Mariani (Easton, Pa.) set up Raspante – less than three minutes later to trim the deficit to 3-2 at 34:04.
- Woods made three more saves before the end of the quarter to keep the margin at one goal.
FOURTH QUARTER
- Maine had the edge in both shots (11-1) and corners (7-0) in the final period.
- The Black Bears started the first of three consecutive corners in the 48th minute. Woods denied Chloe Walton and Poppy Lambert on the first two corners, then Sydney Meader's shot was blocked on the last of three successive corners.
- Woods made three more saves within 80 seconds to keep the 'Cats within 3-2 with three minutes remaining.
- On Maine's seventh corner of the quarter, McAteer recorded a defensive save to deny Lambert, but Hana Davis scored on the rebound to give the visitors a 4-2 lead at 59:03.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Maine finished with a 33-6 shot advantage that included 20-3 on goal.
- The Black Bears also had the edge in corners, 15-3.
- Caron and senior captain Bloem van den Brekel (Eindhoven, Netherlands) led UNH with two shots apiece.
- Maine's Lambert led all players with 12 shots (seven on goal).
UNH NOTEBOOK
- New Hampshire will make its 14th appearance in the America East tournament in the last 15 years.
- McAteer recorded her third goal and first defensive save of the season. She also has two assists for a total of eight points.
- Raspante scored a goal for the second consecutive game, and she moved into a tie for second on the squad with four goals this season.
- Woods recorded 10+ saves for the fourth time this season. Her previous career high of 11 saves was earlier this season (Sept. 4) against nationally-ranked University of Iowa.

- Maine has an 8-2 edge the past 10 meetings and the Black Bears have won four straight in the series.
