Rothwell's Goal Propels UNH to 2-0 Win at Vermont

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Sophomore Lily Rothwell (Lynnfield, Mass.) and senior Bloem van den Brekel (Eindhoven, Netherlands) both scored in the first half to propel the University of New Hampshire field hockey team to Friday afternoon's 2-0 victory against the University of Vermont at Moulton Winder Field.
Junior Jemma Woods (Frimley, England) was credited with four saves to record her second shutout of the season and fourth clean sheet of her career.
UVM goalie Sierra Espeland made seven saves.
UNH improves to 5-10 overall and 2-4 in America East while UVM is now 10-6, 3-4.

LOOKING AHEAD

LOOKING AHEAD
- New Hampshire closes the regular season with a three-game homestand beginning with Senior Day vs. Columbia University on Oct. 24 (2 p.m.).
FIRST QUARTER
- Vermont tallied the advantage in both shots (3-2) and penalty corners (2-0) in the opening 15 minutes, but UNH had a 2-1 edge in shots on goal and scored the only goal of the first quarter.
- Neither team recorded a shot or corner until UVM generated a corner at 6:11. UNH blocked the ensuing shot attempt by Clodagh Ferry, but the home team earned another corner. This time, however, UNH's defense did not allow a shot.
- Rothwell recorded New Hampshire's first shot and then scored off her own rebound to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead at 13:42.
SECOND QUARTER
- UNH controlled play in the second quarter to generate a 6-1 shot advantage (5-1 on goal) and 3-0 edge in corners.
- Pressure by the Wildcats led to a shot by senior Finn Caron (Hampton, N.H.) that was stopped by Espeland at 21:10.
- The visiting 'Cats converted a corner into a goal and 2-0 lead at 22:06. The battery of sophomore Lindsay Lee (Eindhoven, Netherlands) and senior captain Tori Palumbo (Ayer, Mass.) set up the direct shot and tally by van den Brekel.
- Woods answered her only test of the second quarter when she turned aside Maddie Moran at 23:31.
- Espeland kept UVM within two goals when she stopped van den Brekel's initial shot as well as the shot off the rebound by junior Leah Glidden (Kittery, Maine).
THIRD QUARTER
- UVM turned the tables in the third quarter with the edge in both shots (5-0) and corners (2-0).
- Only one of those shot made it through to Woods, however, and she stopped the bid by Perry Willett at 41:15.
- UVM generated consecutive corners in the 45th minute, but both shot attempts we blocked by a UNH field player.
FOURTH QUARTER
- Neither team generated much offense in the final quarter as UNH had a 2-1 shot advantage and UVM had the 2-0 edge in corners.
- Junior Ava Mariani (Easton, Pa.) was turned away by Espeland at 48:22.
- In the 54th minute, Vermont once again earned back-to-back corners. The first corner did not produce a shot, and Ferry's shot on the next corner was blocked.
- Neither team recorded a shot or corner the rest of the way.
GAME NOTEBOOK
- Total shots were even at 10, but UNH had a 9-4 edge in shots on goal.
- UVM had six penalty corners, whereas New Hampshire had three.
- Van den Brekel recorded a team-high three shots – all on goal.
- UVM's Ferry finished with six shots with one on target.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- UNH has outscored the opposition 8-1 the past two games; the Wildcats defeated Merrimack College, 6-1, last Sunday.
- van den Brekel increased her team-leading goal total to six. She ranks second on the team with 13 points.
- Lee increased her team-high assist total to six and she is also UNH's leader in points with 14.
- Rothwell now has three goals and an assist for seven points this season.
SERIES NOTEBOOK
- UNH has a 7-3 edge against Vermont the past 10 meetings.
- New Hampshire's last shut out of UVM was in the 2015 season – also in Burlington.
- The Wildcats won 12 consecutive meetings spanning the 2008-17 seasons.
