Boutilier Makes 39 Saves in 2-1 Loss at #4 Boston College

DURHAM, N.H. – Senior captain Ava Boutilier (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island) recorded a season-high 39 saves, but the University of New Hampshire women's hockey team was edged 2-1 by fourth-ranked Boston College at Conte Forum on Friday.
Boutilier made 18 saves in the first period, followed by nine in the second and 12 in the third to finish with 31 saves for a .951 save percentage. Sophomore Brianna Brooks (Whitby, Ontario) scored UNH's goal.
BC goalie Abigail Levy was credited with 30 saves (.968 save percentage). Kelly Browne, who scored the game-winning goal just 13 seconds after the Wildcats tied the game, and Jillian Fey potted the Eagles' goals.
UNH moves to 0-4-1 both overall and in Hockey East, while BC is now 4-0-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the league.

FIRST PERIOD
- BC recorded an 18-7 shot advantage in the opening 20 minutes.
- The Eagles went on the first power play of the game at 6:04, Boutilier kept the game scoreless with four saves to backbone a successful UNH penalty kill.
- Boutilier made three more saves before the next media timeout at 11:10 to increase her game total to 11.
- BC went back on the power play at 11:32, but this time the Wildcats limited the home team to one shot on goal for another successful penalty kill.
- New Hampshire pressured in the closing minute but Levy stopped the initial shot by freshman Kira Juodikis (LaSalle, Ontario) as well as senior Emily Rickwood (Brantford, Ontario) off the rebound.
SECOND PERIOD
- New Hampshire responded with a 16-10 shot advantage in the second stanza.
- BC was whistled for tripping at 2:16 and elbowing at 3:56 to give the 'Cats a 5-on-3 power play. It was short-lived, however, as UNH was sent to the penalty box for hooking at 4:08.
- After all those penalties were served, the Wildcats went back to the penalty box at 6:43 and Boutilier made four more saves during the penalty kill.
- The Eagles took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Fey at 8:45 – just two seconds after UNH returned to full strength.
- New Hampshire built momentum in the middle of the period as Levy turned aside six shots within one minute. The flurry opened with freshman Brooke Hammer (Commerce Township, Mich.) and senior Paige Rynne (Ancaster, Ontario) at 9:56 and 10:01, respectively, and then Rynne again at 10:18.
- A media timeout did not slow the Wildcat attack, as sophomore Chavonne Truter (Uxbridge, Ontario) fired shots on goal at 10:21 and 10:33, and the flurry ended with Levy's save against sophomore Nicole Kelly (Brantford, Ontario) at 10:56.
- UNH went on consecutive power plays at 12:20 and 14:32. Levy made a total of three saves in that span to preserve BC's 1-0 lead.
THIRD PERIOD
- Beginning with a save that denied Browne at 8:15, Boutilier stopped four shots within a minute to keep the 'Cats within one goal.
- UNH leveled the socre at 14:56 on Brooks' goal. The initial shot by junior Tamara Thiérus (Saint-Jérôme, Quebec) was stopped by Levy, but Brooks deposited the rebound into the net. Juodikis was credited with the secondary assist.
- BC regained the lead 13 seconds later, however, on Browne's goal at 15:09.
- UNH called time out and pulled Boutilier for an extra skater at 18:41. The Wildcats controlled the ensuing faceoff to set up a shot by senior captain Lauren Martin (Cambridge, Ontario) that was stopped by Levy.
- Rynne fired another shot on target with 34 seconds remaining, but Levy also made that save to secure the win.
GAME NOTEBOOK
- Boston College finished with a 41-31 shot advantage.
- Both teams were 0-for-4 on the power play.
- Thiérus recorded a team-high six shots.
- Senior captain Maddie Truax (Gardner, Mass.) and junior Annie Berry (Milton, Mass.) led all skaters with three blocked shots.
- Brooks won 9 of 15 faceoffs (60%).
UNH NOTEBOOK
- It was Juodikis' first career assist. She has recorded a point in three of her first five career games.
- Thiérus has a two-game streak for both assists and points.
- It was the first goal of the season for Brooks, who also has a point in two consecutive games.
- Boutilier increased her career saves total to 2,482, which ranks No. 2 on the program leaderboard to Jen Huggon's 2,851.
SERIES NOTEBOOK
- UNH has a 50-28-6 lifetime record against Boston College.
- The Eagles have won each of the past three matchups and have a 5-4-1 edge the past 10 meetings.
