Torres’ baseline jumper highlights game-ending 7-0 run
DURHAM, N.H. – Amanda Torres(Hudson, N.H.) hit the go-ahead baseline jumper with 13 seconds left to highlight a game-ending 7-0 run that propelled the UNH women's basketball team past Stony Brook, 52-49, in Saturday afternoon's America East game at Lundholm Gym.
With the Wildcats (4-8, 4-5 America East) trailing 49-48 and the shot clock nearing expiration, Torres scored the final two of her team-leading 15 points on a floater off one foot from the right baseline. Torres went 5-for-10 from the field, including 3 of 4 beyond the arc and 2-for-2 at the FT line.
UNH went 14-for-14 from the free throw line –led by an 8-for-8 performance from Ivy Gogolin (Hopkinton, Mass. / 12 points, three rebounds, career-high three steals)-- and connected on 8 of 19 shots (42.1 percent) from 3-point distance to offset SBU's advantages in points in the paint (18-8) and points off turnovers (13-8).
Ivy Gogolin went 8-for-8 at the free-throw line to headline UNH's 14-for-14 team FT shooting.
Paige Cote (Sanford, Maine) scored a career-high 10 points, and Héléna Delaruelle (Enghien-les-Bains, France) added seven points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals.
Stony Brook (5-4, 3-2 AE) missed three consecutive shots in the closing seconds before Brooke Kane (Derry, N.H. / six points, five rebounds) grabbed a key defensive rebound and, following a foul, Adara Groman (Hopkinton, Mass. / two points, five rebounds, two assists) hit two free throws to provide the final margin.
Anastasia Warren scored a game-high 19 points for the Seawolves.
The same two teams meet Sunday at 1 p.m. (ESPN3) in Lundholm Gym.
Stony Brook's biggest lead was eight points, and UNH led by as many as seven.
The game featured four ties and seven lead changes.
The teams finished even in rebounding (33-33).
UNH recorded nine steals to SBU's five.
LOOKING AHEAD
Following Sunday's rematch with Stony Brook, UNH is scheduled to visit UAlbany for games on Saturday, Jan. 23, and Sunday, Jan. 24. Each contest is slated for 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
