'Cats Ousted in AE Quarters Despite Sutherlin's 19 Points, 13 Rebounds

BALTIMORE -- Sean Sutherlin (New Brighton, Minn.) recorded 19 points, 13 rebounds and five assists, but the University of New Hampshire men's basketball team was ousted from the Hercules Tires America East tournament with a 73-67 loss to UMBC in Saturday afternoon's quarterfinal game at UMBC Event Center.
UNH, which tied UMBC for fourth place in the conference standings at 8-8, ends the season at 15-15. UMBC, which made 7 of 8 free throws in the final 64 seconds to secure the win, is now 16-16.
It was the 11th double-double of the season for Sutherlin, who led the Wildcats in points, rebounds and assists in playing all 40 minutes.
Marque Maultsby (Raleigh, N.C.) finished with 15 points, including three 3-pointers. Mark Carbone (Wethersfield, Conn.) also hit three 3-pointers and netted 11 points.
UMBC was led by K.J. Jackson (20 points), R.J. Eytle-Rock (15) and Brandon Horvath (13).
FIRST HALF
* UMBC went on a 9-1 run to build a 13-5 lead at 12:42.
* Nick Guadarrama (Newington, Conn.) and Carbone hit back-to-back 3-pointers to lift New Hampshire within 13-11 at 11:51.
* The Retrievers netted the next six points to extend the advantage to 19-11 at 10:13.
* Carbone and Maultsby both made a 3-pointer to fuel a 10-2 run that trimmed the deficit to 23-21 at 7:53.
* With UNH trailing 26-21, Sutherlin hit a 3-ball and Maultsby hit a pull-up jumper in the lane to tie the score, 26-26, at 6:10.
* Maultsby's 3-pointer from the top of the key gave the Wildcats their first lead of the game, 31-30, at 1:58.
* UMBC's L.J. Owens scored with 47 seconds on the clock to send the home team into the locker room with a 32-31 lead.
SECOND HALF
* There were five ties and four lead changes in the opening five minutes of the second half.
* With the score tied at 43, UMBC inched ahead 48-43 at 12:02.
* Trailing 55-49, Josh Hopkins (Greensboro, N.C.) mad a 3-pointer from the left corner to lift New Hampshire within 55-52 at 7:31.
* The Retrievers responded with a 7-0 run to build the largest lead of the game -- 10 points -- by a score of 62-52 at 5:43.
* UNH went on a 12-4 run to close within 66-64 at 1:27. The Wildcats still trailed by seven points with two minutes remaining, but Sutherlin made both ends of the 1-and-1 at the foul line and Maultsby hit a 3-ball from the left wing.
* UMBC hit four consecutive free throws -- and UNH missed the front end of the bonus -- to advance the score to 70-64 with 40.7 seconds remaining.
* Chris Lester (Barrington, Ill.) made one foul shot to narrow the margin to five points with 29 seconds to play.
* The teams exchanged a pair of free throws to give the home team a 72-67 lead with 20.3 seconds left.
* Jackson hit one more free throw with 19.7 seconds on the clock to close the scoring, as UNH missed a 3-pointer with 11 seconds to go and UMBC pulled down the defensive rebound.

* UNH has a 12-37 record in the Hercules Tire America East tournament. That includes: 0-16 on the road (0-11 in road quarterfinal games); 10-21 in the quarterfinals; 1-3 as the No. 5 seed.
* Sutherlin recorded double-digit rebounds 12 times in 28 games played this season.
* Sutherlin led the team in points for the eighth time, rebounds for the 15th time and both points and rebounds for the eighth time. He was also the top 'Cat in assists for the eighth time.
* This marked the fifth time this season Sutherlin played 40+ minutes.
* The end of the season marks the end of a UNH Wildcat career for Luke Rosinski (Derry, N.H.). He entered the game with 26 seconds remaining for his 17th appearance of the season.
* Carbone was 2-for-2 at the foul line to increase his season total to 39 of 42, and that .929 percentage is best on the program's list of single-season superlatives.
* Hopkins finished No. 7 on the single-season list with 198 3-point attempts.
* UNH recorded the fifth-highest single-season rebound total with 1,239.
* New Hampshire's 769 3-point field goal attempts ranks third on that list.
* The Wildcats made 255 3-pointers, which is No. 4.
* Sutherlin was named to the America East All-Conference Third Team on the eve of Saturday's quarterfinals.
* UNH's 15 wins marked a 10-game improvement from the 2018-19 season.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
* UNH recorded a 31-26 rebounding advantage that included 8-4 on the offensive glass, but UMBC had a 4-1 edge in second chance points.
* UNH made 11 of 28 3-point attempts (39.3%) in comparison to UMBC's 2-for-12 (16.7%).
* The Retrievers made 21 of 26 free throws and that included 18-for-23 in the second half. UNH made 12 of 16 foul shots.
* UMBC converted 15 UNH turnovers into 22 points. The Wildcats scored nine points off six Retrievers' turnovers.
* UMBC shot 51.0% from the floor, including 62.2% (23-37) on two-point FG attempts.
* UMBC led for a total of 30 minutes, 30 seconds, including the final 14:51, in comparison to UNH's 2:31.
