QUICK HITTERS
The biggest news out of Durham prior to UNH's first game of the season was the announcement that 21st-year head coach Sean McDonnell took an indefinite leave of absence for health-related reasons on Aug. 26.
Ricky Santos, who rejoined the UNH staff in March as associate head coach and quarterbacks coach, was named interim head coach Aug. 26. Santos spent the past three seasons (2016-18) as the QB coach at Columbia University. From 2013-15, Santos coached UNH's wide receivers.
Saturday's game is the first matchup between the New Hampshire and Florida International football programs.
UNH has a 1-8 record the past nine matchups against FBS teams. The Wildcats lost 45-14 at Colorado last year. In 2017, UNH prevailed 22-12 against Georgia Southern at Legion Field (Birmingham, Alabama).
Prior to 2017, the 'Cats lost seven consecutive matchups against FBS opponents. New Hampshire won five straight games against FBS competition spanning the 2004-09 seasons.
The Wildcats are 0-1 this season following a 13-10 loss at College of the Holy Cross in the Sept. 7 season opener. UNH erased a pair of three-point deficits (3-0 and 6-3) on a 19-yard rushing TD by Carlos Washington, Jr.; the score gave the 'Cats a 10-6 lead at 6:52 of the fourth quarter.
New Hampshire's defense made a defensive stand when Pop Bush tackled Jack Jewell at the UNH 2 on 4th-and-8 from the UNH 9 with 2:02 remaining. The Holy Cross defense forced a fumble and recovered it in the end zone for a TD on the next play, however, to give the home team a 13-10 lead.
Max Brosmer, who played the second half in UNH's Sept. 7 season-opener at College of the Holy Cross, has been named the Wildcats' starting quarterback against Florida International. He is the first true freshman starting QB in program history.
UNH's top three tacklers at Holy Cross all recorded career highs in tackles. Sophomore safety Pop Bush led all players with nine tackles (all solo stops). Senior cornerback Prince Smith, Jr. followed with eight total tackles, also all of the solo variety. And senior linebacker Cameron Brusko made seven tackles, including his first career sack as part of three tackles for loss.
Dating back to last year, Washington, Jr. has eclipsed 100 rushing yards three consecutive games and 4 of 5.
A total of six Wildcats made their first career start in the 2019 season opener at Holy Cross.
