9/7/2025 12:20:00 AM | Football
DURHAM, N.H. – Sophomore Nick Reed (Harrison, N.Y.) kicked a 40-yard field goal as time expired to lift the University of New Hampshire football team to Saturday night's 19-16 victory against College of the Holy Cross at Wildcat Stadium.
Reed had kicked a 50-yard field goal to tie the score, 16-16, at 9:13 of the fourth quarter. Following a Holy Cross missed 34-yard field goal with 1:40 to play, UNH advanced the ball from the UNH 20 to the HC 24 in eight plays. The Wildcats called time out with three seconds on the clock and, following a Holy Cross timeout, Reed split the uprights to end the game.
Reed also connected on field goals of 33 in the second quarter and 30 yards in the third.
Senior wide receiver Caleb Burke (Johnstown, Pa.) caught three passes for 55 yards and threw a 53-yard touchdown pass to Josh Fillion (Quebec City, Quebec).
Senior running back Myles Thomason (Montclair, N.J.) rushed 19 times for 46 yards. Sophomore quarterback also had 46 yards on 11 carries. He completed 11 of 21 passes for 129 yards and was intercepted twice.
UNH's defense – which recorded eight tackles for loss, including five sacks – was led by redshirt freshman linebacker Trevor Barry (Elma, N.Y.) game-high nine tackles. Senior captain Duncan Moreland (Beverly, Mass.) was next with eight tackles. Classmate Tim Bonagura (Fremont, N.H.) had a team-high two tackles for loss with one sack and four total tackles.
Junior defensive tackle Cameron Garner-Young (Laurel, Md.) blocked a kick for the second consecutive week with a blocked PAT in the first quarter and Raleigh Collins III (Philadelphia, Pa.) recorded an interception for the second time in as many weeks.
UNH improves to 2-0 and Holy Cross is 0-2.

FIRST QUARTER
- On the third play from scrimmage HC's Eli Thompson intercepted the ball at the UNH 27 and raced down the left sideline into the end zone to give the Crusaders a 6-0 lead at 13:29. Garner-Young blocked the PAT to keep the margin at six points; Moreland scooped up the ball at the UNH 5 and was tackled out of bounds at the UNH 25.
- And unsportsmanlike penalty against the visitors followed by a 17-yard kickoff return by Darren Burton II (Newark, N.J.) gave the 'Cats excellent field position at the UNH 47
- On the next play – a trick play – Burke found Fillion alone down the right sideline as he caught the pass on the HC 15 and ran into the end zone. Reed's PAT kick gave the Wildcats a 7-6 lead at 13:16.
- The Crusaders answered with a 12-play, 58-yard drive that culminated in a 34-yard field goal by Luis Palenzuela to put the visitors back in front, 9-7, at 7:39.
SECOND QUARTER
- Neither team scored again until Reed scored with zeroes on the clock to cap a 7-play, 48-yard drive and give the 'Cats a 10-9 lead heading into halftime.
THIRD QUARTER
- UNH's defense forced Holy Cross to punt in its first two possessions of the third quarter.
- On the Wildcats' second possession of the second half, a 31-yard pass play from Vezza to Burke advanced the ball to the HC 28. Three consecutive runs by Vezza moved the ball to the HC 12 and Reed's 30-yard field goal extended UNH's lead to 13-9 at 2:05.
FOURTH QUARTER
- UNH had stopped the Crusaders on third down near the end of the fourth quarter, but a personal foul against the Wildcats at the end of the play extended the drive for the visitors and they capitalized when Jayde Clerveaux scored on a 1-yard run and Palenzuela's PAT gave HC a 16-13 lead at 12:13.
- On UNH's next drive, a pair of 15-yard penalties against the Crusaders helped advance the ball to the HC 35. On 4th-and-7 from the HC 32, Reed made a field goal from 50 yards to tie the score, 16-16 at 9:13.
- Collins III intercepted a deep ball down the middle at the UNH 36 to quickly give the ball back to the 'Cats at 7:21.
- New Hampshire was forced to punt following a 3-and-out.
- The Crusaders began the next drive at the HC 29 with 5:33 to play and marched the ball to the UNH 7 on six consecutive runs. Bonagura stopped Clerveaux for a three-yard loss and then D.J. Johnson (Wilbraham, Mass.) sacked Cal Swanson for a six-yard loss.
- On 4th-and-goal from the UNH 16, Garner-Young surged up the middle and Palenzuela pulled the kick wide left to keep the score tied at 16 with 1:40 remaining.
- Following Thomason's run out of bounds for a six-yard gain, Vezza completed a pass down the left sideline to Chase Wilson (Lake Charles, La.) to the UNH 47.
- Two plays later, Holy Cross was penalized for roughing the passer to set up 1st-and-10 at the HC 36. On 3rd-and-12, Wilson caught the ball at the HC 35 and turned it into a 14-yard gain to extend the drive.
- Vezza spiked the ball to stop the clock with 13 second left, then ran around the left tackle for a 2-yard gain that put the ball on the left hashmark for Reed with three seconds on the clock.
- Following a timeout by both teams, Reed lifted UNH to victory with a 40-yard field goal.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- Prior to the game vs. Holy Cross, Reed's longest field goal was a 39-yarder he made in last week's season opener at NC Central.
- The four field goals and 13 points both marked career bests for Reed.
- Collins III, who did not have in interception in 12 games played at West Virginia University, has two in two games as a Wildcat.
- Both Jones and Collins III finished with a career high of seven tackles.
- Burke is now 1-for-2 in career passing; he threw an incomplete pass last season.
- Matt Guidebeck (North Reading, Mass.) averaged 41.5 yards on four punts with a long of 51.
- Fillion's 57 all-purpose yards led all Wildcats.
