UNH Shuts Down Campbell for 24-10 Road Win

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Sophomore quarterback Matt Vezza (Elmhurst, Ill.) rushed for a touchdown and threw both a TD and 2-point conversion to lead the University of New Hampshire football team to Saturday's 24-10 victory against Campbell University at Barker-Lane Stadium.
Vezza completed 24 of 40 passes for 230 yards, including a 4-yard touchdown pass to senior running back Myles Thomason (Montclair, N.J.), and rushed for 60 yards, including a 6-yard TD. Thomason finished with 96 all-purpose yards on 17 carries for 75 yards and four catches for 21.
Grad student Chase Wilson (Lake Charles, La.) had a team-high nine catches for 76 yards and senior Caleb Burke (Johnstown, Pa,) had a team-high 85 yards on six receptions.
UNH's defense, which shut out Campbell in both the first and fourth quarters, recorded five tackles for loss and a takeaway on a forced fumble by redshirt freshman D.J. Johnson (Wilbraham, Mass.) recovered by junior Darren Burton II (Newark, N.J.). Grad student Cole Bullock (Chatsworth, Calif.) had a team-high seven tackles and sophomore Jordan Macallister (South Orange, N.J.) had two-and-a-half tackles for loss.
Sophomore kicker Nick Reed (Harrison, N.Y.) made field goals of 36, 50 and 37 yards, and also kicked a PAT.
Campbell QB Mike Chandler II completed 8 of 11 passes for 133 yards and rushed for 28. JJ Cown led the Camels with 54 rushing yards, including a 9-yard TD.
UNH improves to 4-4 overall and 2-2 in CAA Football while CU is now 2-6, 2-2.

FIRST QUARTER
- In the first meeting between the UNH and Campbell football programs, the teams played to a scoreless first quarter.
SECOND QUARTER
- Reed gave the Wildcats a 3-0 lead at 6:11 of the second quarter when his 36-yard field goal capped a 16-play, 48-yard drive that took 9:41 off the clock.
- Campbell responded with a 10-play, 67-yard drive to tie the game on a 25-yard field goal by Alex Crabb at 1:09.
- Vezza directed a 9-play, 33-yard drive highlighted by an 11-yard completion to Burke on 4th-and-1 at the CU 43 and ended on Reed's 50-yard field goal as time expired to give the 'Cats a 6-3 lead.
THIRD QUARTER
- Reed's third field goal of the game, this time from 37 yards, extended UNH's lead to 9-3 at 11:20 of the third quarter.
- Campbell took its first lead of the game, 10-9, on Cowan's 9-yard run at 9:05.
- The Camels preserved the one-point lead when they blocked Reed's 26-yard field goal attempt with five seconds on the clock.
FOURTH QUARTER
- UNH outscored the hosts 15-0 in the fourth quarter.
- The Wildcats went back in front, 17-10, on a 9-play, 57-yard drive that included a 4-yard pass to Wilson on 4th-and-1, and a 42-yard pass to Burke on 3rd-and-12. Vezza connected with Myles on an out pattern at the goal line for a 4-yard TD and then Vezza threw an identical ball to Burk for the 2-point conversion at 8:30.
- UNH's defense forced a 3-and-out on the next Campbell possession.
- The Camels got the ball back with 3:53 remaining. The clock advance to the 2-minute timeout, out of which the home team faced 4th-and-17 at the CU 6. Kelby Hampton (Philadelphia, Pa.) broke up the pass at the CU 24 to give possession to New Hampshire.
- On the next play, Vezza followed Thomason through a hole on the right side for a 6-yard touchdown run. Reed's PAT kick extended UNH's lead to 24-10 at 1:48.
- The Wildcats' defense secured the win when Johnson forced a fumble that Burton II recovered at the CU 13 with 1:20 on the clock.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- UNH had a season-high 140 rushing yards.
- The score-opening drive of 9:41 was UNH's longest of the season.
- The UNH defense held Campbell to 225 yards of offense – the lowest total by an opponent this season.
- Campbell's 92 rushing yards also marked the lowest mark by an opponent.
- UNH held the ball for a season-high 38:17 with 8:31 in the first quarter, 9:58 in the second and 11:21 in the third.
- Mcallister's 2.5 tackles for loss is a personal best.
- Vezza leads UNH with six rushing TDs this season.
