Astle, Hoerner, Ulrich Lead ‘Cats to Third at America East Indoors

Hoerner and Ulrich win individually and in relays, Astle repeats as shot put champ.
BOSTON – The University of New Hampshire men's track & field team finished the weekend at the America East indoor championships with a third place team finish, their highest finish since 2015.
The Wildcats were led by junior thrower Zachary Astle (Newbury, N.H.), defending his indoor shot put title from last year with a throw of 53 feet, five inches. Astle won the event last year with a throw of 55'3.5". For his performance in the shot put, as well as an all-conference finish in the weight throw on Friday, Astle was named Most Outstanding Field Performer.
On the track, senior Brett Hoerner (Manchester, N.H.) took gold for the fifth and sixth time at the conference level, and the first time as an individual; he won the 1000 meter run with a time of 2 minutes, 25.37 seconds, which was a new personal best in the event. Hoerner was also a part of the first-place distance medley relay team on Friday, and the 4x800 team on Saturday.
A third individual winner for the Wildcats, senior William Ulrich (Mineola, N.Y.) took first in the mile with a time of 4:09.47. It was also his first individual championship, and his third of the weekend; his other two came as part of a relay team, the distance medley Friday, and the 4x800 Saturday.
Hoerner and Ulrich were joined by Matthew Adams (Concord, N.H.), and Aaron Dobe (Contoocook, N.H.), in the 4x800; the team won the event with a time of 7:36.53.
Elsewhere in the meet, sophomore Jordan Buckmire (Nashua, N.H.) took fourth in the triple jump, with a distance of 49'5.75". Buckmire's jump set a new school record in the event, breaking a record that has stood since 1997, set by Kamau Peterson (49'5").
The Wildcats finished third in the team score with 113 points, with only Ualbany and UMass Lowell ahead of them. UAlbany swept the meet for both men's and women's, with a score of 178.50 in the men's standings, 213 points in the women's.

Sophomore Frederick Schakke (Hampton, N.H.) took first in the 1000m run (2:44.9) and the pole vault (10'11.75) in heptathlon competition. He was the top Wildcat finisher in the heptathlon, taking fourth with a score of 4496.
Freshman Brian Genet (Merrimack, N.H.) took a fourth place finish in the heptathlon 1000m run, finishing in 2:49.87. He also took sixth in the pole vault with a 10-foot vault. In the final standings, he finished sixth with 4208 points.
Sophomore Michael Monahan took first in the 60m hurdles in 8.54 seconds. He also was top-8 in the heptathlon pole vault (9'8") and the 1000m run (3:03.33). Monahan was seventh in the heptathlon standings, taking seventh with 4114 points.

- Michael Monahan (Tewksbury, Mass.) finished fifth in the 60m hurdles, with a time of 8.6 seconds. Andrew Matteucci (Andover, Mass.) took seventh in 8.63 seconds.
- The 4x400 team of Joseph Hook (Rockaway, N.J.), Ian Daly (Meredith, N.H.), Chris Pinkham (Concord, N.H.), and Thomas Harter (Hampton, N.H.) took fifth in 3:18.34.
- Thomas Chant (North Conway, N.H.) scored in the 60m dash, taking seventh in 7.09 seconds. Chant becomes the first UNH male to score in the 60m dash since 2011, when it first became a championship
- Emmanuel Nkounkou (Dover, N.H.) scored with a seventh place finish in the high jump, with a jump of 6'0.5".
- Chris Pinkham also scored in the 500m dash, taking seventh in 1:05.16.
- Edward Speidel (Dover, N.H.) was a co-winner of the Elite 18 Award, with a 4.0 GPA.
