BOSTON – University of New Hampshire senior forward Ashley Storey (Cumberland, Maine) has been named the America East Player of the Week, the league announced Monday afternoon, after a week in which she averaged 28 points per game, dropping a career high 33 points on Sunday.
Storey led the Wildcats in a 1-1 week, tallying 23 points against UMass on the road, and career-high 33 points against CCSU at home on Sunday. The Wildcats found themselves down against UMass by as many as 19 points on Thursday evening, but led by Storey's 17 second-half points, the Wildcats cut the lead to just one point, with four seconds left in the game with the score 66-65 on a layup by Amanda Torres Hudson, N.H.). The Wildcats ultimately fell in that contest by a score of 67-65. Storey also had a team-high six boards, two assists, two blocks, and three steals in the game.
Storey followed up that performance by dropping the first 30+ point performance by a Wildcat in two full seasons; Storey stomped her old career-high of 24 points with a 33-point performance on 13-22 shooting, and a career-high four made three-pointers, on five attempts (80.0%) while also grabbing a game-high eight rebounds. The last Wildcat to tally 30 or more points in a game was Carlie Pogue '18 back in the 2016-17 season, scoring 31 points against UMBC on February 26, 2017.
Storey's Player of the Week nod by the America East conference is the first of her career; it's her third career weekly honor, as she was named the Rookie of the Week twice in her debut season. This is UNH's first Player of the Week award since the 2017-18 season, with Pogue being named Player of the Week on February 19, 2018.
It's also UNH's second weekly award of the season in as many weeks; freshman guard Héléna Delaruelle (Enghien-les-Bains, France) was named Rookie of the Week last Monday.
The Wildcats have 10 days between games and will begin a four game road trip that will extend into the conference season next Wednesday, December 18th as the 'Cats travel to Hanover for the Granite State Rivalry against Dartmouth at 7 P.M. on NESN. New Hampshire returns home after the four game road trip next year, hosting the Hartford Hawks on Sunday, January 5 at 1 P.M. For tickets, visit UNHWildcats.com/tickets or call (603)862-4000.
