9/28/2018 7:20:00 PM | Field Hockey
DURHAM, N.H. – Katie Audino (Severn, Md.) recorded a goal and an assist and Kelsey Rudert (North Grafton, Mass.) tallied a season-high nine saves to lead the University of New Hampshire field hockey team to Friday afternoon's 3-2 victory against No. 18 University of Maine at Memorial Field.
Audino scored the first goal of the game and set up a goal by Bailey Fanikos (Lynnfield, Mass.) that gave UNH a 2-1 lead it would not relinquish. Rachel Thomson (Sanbornton, N.H.) scored the Wildcats' other goal.
Rudert, who missed the previous two games because of injury, had a stellar game. Her assertive play off the goal line kept the Black Bears scoreless through 35 mintues with five saves, and Rudert made a save with no time remaining in regulation to preserve the victory.
Maine goalie Mia Borley, who was pulled in favor of an extra field player with 57 seconds remaining, was credited with two saves.
UNH improves to 3-6 overall and 1-0 in America East. Maine, which started the season on an eight-game win streak, is now 8-2, 0-1.

THE DIFFERENCE
* New Hampshrie was very opportunistic with three goals on six shots, five of which were on goal.
* UNH called time out with 57 seconds to play, but Maine pressured and generated an untimed corner.
* Rudert denied Samantha Wagg, but the Black Bears were awarded another corner. This time, the insert eluded the stick-stop and the Wildcats denied re-entry into the circle to end the game.
GAME RECAP
• The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead at 13:06 on a restart outside the top of the circle. Rachel Bossi (Chelmsford, Mass.) dribbled the ball into the circle and slipped a pass through traffic to the middle of the circle, where Audino fired a low shot into the cage.
• Maine generated a penalty corner at 16:30, and Rudert made a diving save toward the right post to deny Libby Reidl.
• Five minutes later, Rudert charged off her line to make a sliding save to once again stop Reidl.
• In the 26th minute, UNH earned a corner. The battery of Bloem van den Brekel (Eindhoven, Netherlands) and Bossi set up a blast off the stick of Nicky Bajus (Lions Bay, British Columbia) that rolled barely right of the cage.
• Two minutes later, the Black Bears had another opportunity on a corner and Reidl's direct shot was stopped by Rudert.
• UNH took a 1-0 lead into halftime despite Maine's advantage in shots (9-3), shots on goal (5-2) and corners (3-1).
• Maine tied the score, 1-1, at 42:56 when Nina Keur carried the ball into the circle and scored from long range.
• Fanikos corralled Audino's past and beat Borley for her team-leading fourth goal of the season and a 2-1 lead at 51:45.
• Thomson scored off a rebound to extend the advantage to 3-1 at 61:08.
• The Black Bears called time out and scored 95 seconds later on a series of corners. Reidl was once again denied by Rudert, but Wagg scored on the next corner to trim the deficit to one goal.
• UNH called a timeout at 69:03 and the Wildcats made one last defensive stand with no time remaining on the clock for the victory.
