Wiedenfeld Tallies Match-High 11 Kills in 3-0 Win vs. UMass Lowell

DURHAM- Freshman Maddie Wiedenfeld (Omaha, Neb.) recorded a match-high 11 kills to lead the University of New Hampshire volleyball team to a 3-0 victory against UMass-Lowell at Lundholm Gymnasium on Friday night.
Wiedenfeld finished with just one error on 18 total attacks for an impressive .556 hitting percentage; she also had two blocks for a total of 12 points.
Fellow freshman Abby Sullivan (Methuen, Mass.) also stood out in the last two sets, posting five kills and only one error on eight total attacks for a .500 hitting percentage, which ranked second; Sullivan also had a match-high four blocks.
Emily Tanski (Plymouth, Mich.) had a team-high nine digs and a match high three service aces. She also had eight assists. Logan Welti (Middleton, Wis.) had the second most digs on the team with eight; she also contributed two aces.
Mali Jereczek (Green Bay, Wis.) was the setter in the first two sets and had 17 assists along with five digs. Emma Patlovich (Lake Forest, Ill.) led the 'Cat attack to a .588 attack percentage in Set 3 with eight assists.
The Wildcats improve their record to 5-10 and are 1-0 in America East play. UML is 1-13, 0-1.

SET 1
- There were three tie scores and two lead changes in the first set.
- UNH won the opening point but lost five straight afterwards.
- UML took an early 8-2 lead causing UNH to take a timeout.
- After the timeout, an ace from Tanski helped the 'Cats on a 7-0 run.
- The UNH run continued with kills from Sarah Shelton (Ellsworth, Maine) and Wiedenfeld to put the Wildcats on an 11-1 burst to go up 13-9.
- After the River Hawks closed within 15-13, the 'Cats reeled off nine consecutive points to take control of the set.
- UML attempted to quell the run by calling time out at 19-13, but a solo block from Alexa Markman (Chicago, Ill.) led the Wildcats on the final run of the set.
SET 2
- There were no lead changes or tie scores as the Wildcats led the entire second set after taking a 2-0 lead.
- The visitors closed within 9-8, but a kill by Kennedi Smith (The Woodlands, Texas) and ace by Jereczek pushed the margin to 11-8.
- Shortly thereafter, consecutive kills by Sarah Shelton (Ellsworth, Maine) and Wiedenfeld gave UNH a 15-10 lead.
- Trailing 18-14, the River Hawks committed four consecutive errors to see the deficit grow to eight points, 22-14.
- UML responded with three consecutive points, but New Hampshire answered that with a 3-0 run and closed out the set on a combined block by Wiedenfeld and Sullivan.
SET 3
- There was one tie score and no lead changes in the third set.
- Sullivan put UNH on top early with a kill to open the set.
- UNH took an early 2-0 lead, but UML answered with two of its own to tie the score.
- Back-to-back kills by Emma Tupa (Brecksville, Ohio) and Sullivan, followed by a combo block from Wiedenfeld and Sullivan ignited a 5-0 run that gave the Wildcats a lead they would not relinquish.
- UML had a three-point streak to close within 14-10 but the 'Cats answered with nine consecutive points to build a commanding 23-10 advantage.
- Sullivan and Wiedenfeld had two kills apiece to fuel the decisive run.
- Tanski aced the River Hawks to close out the set and match.
