QUICK HITTERS
New Hampshire is led by 20th-year head coach Sean McDonnell, who has guided the Wildcats to the NCAA FCS tournament each of the last 14 years (longest active streak in the nation).
Coach McDonnell recorded his 96th career victory in CAA conference play Oct. 27, 2018 with UNH's 34-0 win at Villanova. McDonnell's predecessor, Bill Bowes, is No. 3 at 97 career conference wins.
UNH has an 8-10 lifetime record against James Madison University and that includes 5-4 at home. Last year at Bridgeforth Stadium, top-ranked JMU limited the No. 16 Wildcats to 193 total yards of offense in a 21-0 win. In the most recent meeting in Durham (Oct. 15, 2016), the Dukes took a 42-12 lead with 10:00 remaining and held on for the 42-39 win.
Carlos Washington, Jr. was honored as the CAA Football Rookie of the Week on Monday; it marked the first conference award of the year for the Wildcats. Washington, Jr. carried the ball 17 times for a career-high 179 yards and two touchdowns to lead UNH to a 34-0 victory at Villanova.
UNH's defense has been stout on third downs; opponents have converted just 30 of 109 chances, and that 27.5% conversion rate ranks No. 5 in the nation. The Wildcats' D is also No. 6 in passing yards allowed (161.1 per game).
The defense has allowed a total of 341 yards of offense the past two games. UNH limited Villanova to 164 yards one week after holding Delaware to 177. The last time the Wildcats' defense yielded fewer than a total of 350 yards in two consecutive games was in 2009.
UNH's 34-0 win at Villanova marked the second shutout win of the season; the Wildcats also blanked College of the Holy Cross, 28-0. Prior to this year, the last time New Hampshire shut out two opponents in a season was 1976 – 13-0 vs. Boston U. and 23-0 vs. UMass.
The Wildcats' defense stifled Villanova's offense with 164 total yards allowed and that included a mere 13 rushing yards. The 164 yards total offense marked the lowest by an opponent since Sept. 25, 2010 (129 by Lehigh University; 31-10 win). The 13 rushing yards marked the lowest by an opponent since Sept. 12, 2009 (13 at Ball State University; 23-16 win).
Last week on offense, UNH recorded season highs in points (34), rushes (43), rushing yards (246), yards per rush (5.7), rushing TDs (four), yards per pass (6.9), yards per play (6.1) and time of possession (35:43). Neil O'Connor enters Saturday's game vs. James Madison ranked No. 5 on UNH's leaderboard for career receiving yards (2,982); he needs 46 yards to tie No. 4 Curtis Olds (3,020) and 90 to tie No. 3 David Gamble (3,072).
UNH has an 0-3 record against nationally-ranked teams this year, including 0-2 at home.
