Wildcats Record Second Shutout of Season, First on Road Since 1990
VILLANOVA, Pa. – Carlos Washington, Jr. (Fort Washington, Md.) carried the ball 17 times for a career-high 179 yards and two touchdowns to lead the University of New Hampshire football team to Saturday afternoon's 34-0 victory against Villanova University at Villanova Stadium.
Washington, Jr. set the tone early in the game with a 75-yard TD run on the first play from scrimmage. He also scored on a 16-yard scamper in the second quarter.
UNH quarterback Trevor Knight (Amherst, N.H.) completed 13 of 23 passes for 158 yards. He also had eight carries for 27 yards, including touchdown runs of 11 and 7 yards.
Neil O'Connor (Leominster, Mass.) had a game-high six catches for 79 yards. Kieran Presley (Amherst, Mass.) had four receptions for a game-high 79 yards.
UNH's offense had 43 rushes for 246 yards, both of which are season highs. New Hampshire finished with 404 total yards and the defense held 'Nova to 164 total yards, which is the low by an opponent in 2018.
New Hampshire's defense made nine tackles for loss, including four sacks.
Ryan Sosnak (Bethel Park, Pa.) finished with a game-high seven tackles with two tackles for loss, including one sack. Rick Ellison (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) and Pop Lacey (Reading, Pa.) had six tackles apiece; Ellison made two stops behind the line of scrimmage.
Josh Kania (Milton, Ga.) finished with four tackles; he also forced a fumble that he recovered.
UNH is now 2-6 overall and 1-4 in the CAA, while Villanova fell to 3-5, 0-5.

1st QUARTER
* On the first play from scrimmage, Washington, Jr. found a hole on the right side and raced down the sideline for a 75-yard touchdown. The PAT by Jason Hughes (Atkinson, N.H.) gave UNH a 7-0 lead 12 seconds into the game.
* New Hampshire had a punt blocked for the third consecutive week to give VU 1st-and-10 at the UNH 25. The visiting Wildcats' defense allowed just one yard, however, and Drew Kesge's 41-yard field goal attempt sailed wide right at 11:41.
* Knight then orchestrated a 10-play 56-yard drive capped by Hughes' 37-yard field goal that extended UNH's lead to 10-0 at 4:42.
* Through 15 minutes, New Hampshire had a 148-37 edge in total yards of offense.
2nd QUARTER
* UNH's third scoring drive started with Knight's 29-yard completion to Presley and ended on an 11-yard keeper by Knight around the right tackle. That 5-play, 61-yard drive extended the lead to 17-0 at 6:10.
* On Villanova's next possession, Kania jarred the ball loose from running back Aaron Forbes and recovered the fumble to give UNH possession at the VU 39.
* Two plays later, Washington, Jr. ran the ball into the end zone but a holding penalty brought the ball back for 1st-and-10 at the VU 23. After an 8-yard pass play, Washington, Jr. ran up the middle untouched for a 16-yard TD and a 24-0 lead at 4:38.
* In the last minute of the half, Villanova drove inside UNH's 10 yard line. On 3rd-and-goal from the UNH 3, Zach Bednarczyk completed a swing pass to Aaron Forbes, bur Alonzo Addae (Pickering, Ontario) knocked Forbes out of bounds at the two yard line. After a VU timeout, Bednarczyk's pass was short of intended receiver Jarrett McClenton at the goal line to keep the score 24-0.
3rd QUARTER
* UNH's defense held Villanova to a 3-and-out to start the second half, then UNH marched 70 yards on 12 plays on a scoring drive that consumed almost half the quarter (7 minutes, 27 seconds).
* Knight was a perfect 3-for-3 for 24 yards and ran the ball three times for 31 yards, including a 7-yard touchdown in which he sidestepped a defender at the VU 3 and went untouched into the end zone. His second rushing TD of the game increased the lead to 31-0 at 6:24.
* Through three quarters, the total yards were 375-128 in favor of the visiting 'Cats.
4th QUARTER
* New Hampshire's defense held Villanova to 3-and-out for the fourth time in the game, and UNH's offense had another lengthy, time-consuming drive of 14 plays, 61 yards and 7:27. UNH advanced the ball from its 30 yard-line to the VU 3 and Hughes' second field goal of the game, this time from 26 yards, gave New Hampshire a 34-0 lead at 12:12.
* At that point, the second-half totals for UNH were 26 plays for 131 yards and Villanova's offense had six plays for minus-three yards.
* 'Nova drove to the UNH 20 in the closing seconds, but the defense preserved the shutout as Qadir Ismail's pass sailed high through the end zone to end the game.
SERIES NOTEBOOK
* New Hampshire has won four straight against Villanova to improve to 13-11 all-time. The three previous meetings were in 2010, 2011 and 2013.
* This was UNH's first game at Villanova Stadium since 2010.
* This was New Hampshire's largest margin of victory in the series since Oct. 1, 2005 (41-17 at Wildcat Stadium).
* This is the second shutout in 24 lifetime meetings between the programs. UNH also won by a score of 34-0 on Nov. 9, 1996.
