DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire track and field teams return to action this weekend after the mid-December break, hosting Holy Cross in a dual meet at Paul Sweet Oval on Saturday.
The UNH men's track and field team will look for even more production out of two-time America East field performer of the week Michael Shanahan (Dover, N.H.), who has already made impressive strides this season, breaking the school record for weight throw three times in the first two meets. His most recent weight throw distance was 70 feet, 5.75 inches, which currently ranked for fifth-best in the nation.
UP NEXT:
The Wildcats are now back in action after the winter break, with a packed weekend next weekend; the John Thomas Terrier Invitational in Boston takes place on Friday, Jan. 26 at noon, with another home meet the following Saturday, Jan. 27 at 11 A.M. for a tri-meet with Dartmouth and Vermont. The following weekend, the Wildcats compete in the New England Indoor championships, also in Boston, hosted by Northeastern. The championships are on Friday, Feb. 2 and Saturday, Feb. 3.
LAST TIME OUT:
Along with Shanahan's performance, the Wildcats also found points in the middle distance events, specifically the 1000m run and the mile run. In the 1k, two wildcats took the top two spots; junior Cody Symonds (Alton, N.H.) and senior Seamus Sargeant (Fairpoint, N.Y.) finished first and second in two minutes, 34.56 seconds and two minutes, 35.07 seconds.
Senior Joel Nkounkou (Dover, N.H.) competed in the heptathlon on Friday evening, and finished in second overall with 5025 total points, earning seven for UNH's total. Individually he won the long jump (23'), the shot put (42'), and the 60m hurdles (8.47 seconds).
In the final team score, the Wildcats just edged out Dartmouth, 157 points to 151. Maine finished in third with 129 points and Vermont finished fourth with 115.
