Shanahan Sets New Record, ‘Cats Take First in Holy Cross Dual Meet

Senior thrower Michael Shanahan broke the school weight throw record for the third time this season.
DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire track and field teams were in action on Sunday afternoon at the Paul Sweet Oval in the UNH Field House for a dual-meet with Holy Cross.
The men's track and field team took the meet by a final score of 220-191, with senior thrower Michael Shanahan (Dover, N.H.) breaking the school record in weight throw for the third time this season, throwing 72 feet, 4.5 inches, ranked fifth-best in the nation.
Fellow senior Joel Nkounkou (Dover, N.H.) took first in two events, the 55m hurdles and the long jump. Nkounkou ran the 55m hurdles in 7.9 seconds, and had a 21 foot, 11.75 inch long jump. Nkounkou also finished second in the high jump with a 6'2.75" jump.
The Wildcats also dominated in the track events, taking first in nine events, highlighted by Timothy Kenefick (Guilford, Conn.) taking first in the 3000m run in eight minutes, 33.56 seconds, 23 seconds faster than the second place finisher.

The Wildcats are now back in action after the winter break, with a packed weekend next weekend; the John Thomas Terrier Invitational in Boston takes place on Friday, Jan. 26 at noon, with another home meet the following Saturday, Jan. 27 at 11 A.M. for a tri-meet with Dartmouth and Vermont. The following weekend, the Wildcats compete in the New England Indoor championships, also in Boston, hosted by Northeastern. The championships are on Friday, Feb. 2 and Saturday, Feb. 3.
MEET RESULTS
Other top performers for the Wildcats were:
- Sophomore Christopher Gansfuss (Flemington, N.J.) finished second behind Nkounkou in the 55m dash with a 8.24 second finish.
- In the 200m dash, sophomore Joseph Hook (Rockaway, N.J.) took first in 24.25 seconds.
- Senior Brandon Allen (Concord, N.H.) finished first in the 400m run with a 51.01 second finish.
- The 500m run had a one-two wildcat finish; Senior Thomas Harter (Hampton, N.H.) finished first in 1 minute, 8.3 seconds and senior Joseph Poggi (Derry, N.H.) took second in 1 minute, 8.57 seconds.
- Another one-two finish in the 800m run, sophomore Matthew Adams (Concord, N.H.) took first in 1:59.61, and freshman Dylan McGlaughlin (Moultonborough, N.H.) finished second in 2:03.87.
- The 1000m run also saw a one-two finish, junior William Ulrich (Mineola, N.Y.) finished first in 2:28.39 and sophomore Samuel Lanternier (Derry, N.H.) finished second in 2:33.18.
- The final middle distance event finishing one-two was the mile run; Sophomore Alexander Saveliev (Concord, N.H.) took first in four minutes, 26.56 seconds and freshman Aidan Sullivan (Nashua, N.H.) took second in four minutes, 32.23 seconds.
- The Wildcats also swept the relays, taking the 4x400 relay in 3:33.93 (team of Christian Ehlers (Kingston, N.H.), Hook, James O'Brien, and Harter) and the 4x800 relay in 8:07.66 (team of Poggi, Nicholas Brown (Conway, N.H.), Adams, and Ulrich).
- In the pole vault, senior Alex Tamulonis (Mason, N.H.) took first with a 13 foot, 11.25 inch vault.
- In shot put, the Wildcats had the top two spots with senior Nicholas Ritzo (Rye, N.H.) in first and sophomore Zachary Astle (Newbury, N.H.) in second, throwing 53 feet, 2.75 inches and 51 feet, 0.25 inches.
