BOSTON – Senior Yoofi Abaka-Amuah (Worcester, Mass.) of the University of New Hampshire men's track & field team was named the America East Male Field Athlete of the Week on Tuesday.
Abaka-Amuah was the discus champion and runner-up in the hammer at the Jaylin Rainford Invitational, which was held March 27 at Bryant University. With those 18 total points earned for UNH's team score, he placed second in the meet's MVP standings and helped the Wildcats place second in the team standings in their first outdoor meet of the season.
In the discus, Abaka-Amuah advanced to the finals in second place but ascended to the top of the leaderboard on his first attempt in the finals flight – fourth throw overall – with a mark of 48.04 meters (157 feet-7 inches); that proved to be the winning distance in the field of 32 competitors.
Abaka-Amuah was in second place in the hammer through two rounds before climbing to the top of the table with a throw of 58.04m on his third attempt. He was knocked out of the leader position in the fourth round but held onto second place and recorded his top throw of 60.32m (197-10) on his last attempt.
Abaka-Amuah, who was named the Male Field Athlete of the Week twice during the 2025-26 indoor season, was named the 2026 America East Men's Indoor Track & Field Performer of the Year. He earned gold in both the shot put and weight throw at the conference championship meet, and his top shot put throw of 19.45m ranked 17th in the nation – one spot away from qualifying for the NCAA national meet.
The UNH track & field teams return to action Saturday, April 4 (11am) for the Jim Boulanger Invitational at the Reggie F. Atkins Track & Field Facility.
