’Cats Set Relay Record, Nkounkou 2nd in Decathlon

DURHAM, N.H. – The 4x800 relay team raced to a championship meet record and junior Joel Nkounkou (Dover, N.H.) finished second in the decathlon to lead the University of New Hampshire in the America East Outdoor Track & Field Championships that concluded Sunday at the Reggie Atkins Track & Field Facility in Wildcat Stadium.
The Wildcats finished third in the meet with 116 points. Albany won its 13th straight men's meet with 166 points and UMBC was second with 139. UMass Lowell trailed UNH with 108.50 points and Binghamton was fifth with 99.
UNH moved up a couple of spots form its fifth-place finish of a year ago and posted its best result since a third place in 2010, the last time the championship was held here.
The relay team of sophomore Brett Hoerner (Manchester, N.H.), senior Ryan Chiesa (Stockholm, N.J.) sophomore William Ulrich (Mineola, N.Y.) and senior Jacob Kittredge (Amherst, N.H.) broke the meet record with a time of 7:32.22. The old mark of 7:32.37 was set by the University at Albany in 2009.
Nkounkou climbed a couple of spots from his fourth-place finish in the decathlon last year and piled up a personal best total of 6,547 points. Joe Miceli of Binghamton won the decathlon with 6,760 points.

MEET RESULTS
Among the other top finishers for the Wildcats on Sunday:
- Junior Nicholas Ritzo (Rye, N.H.) finished second in the shot put at 52 feet, 9.25 inches and was third in the discus at 155 feet, 3 inches.
- Freshman Zachary Astle (Newbury, N.H.) was third in the shot at 52 feet, 3.25 inches and seventh in the discus.
- Junior Brandon Allen (East Elmhurst, N.Y.) was second in the 200 meter dash and fifth in the 100.
- Jake Kittredge was second in the 800 at 1:51.45. The winning time was 1:51.45.
- Ulrich was second in the 1500 meters in 3:50.93.
