Astle Leads 'Cats at UMass; DMR Shines at Penn Relays

AMHERST, Mass. – Freshman Zachary Astle (Newbury, N.H.) won the shot put and finished second in the discus to lead the University of New Hampshire men's track & field team to fourth place in the Pre-Conference meet at the University of Massachusetts on Saturday.
UNH completed as a split squad over the weekend and some members of the team went to the Penn Relays in Philadelphia.
The Wildcat distance medley relay team of sophomore Brett Hoerner (Manchester, N.H.), junior Brandon Allen (East Elmhurst, N.Y.), senior Jacob Kittredge (Amherst, N.H.) and sophomore William Ulrich (Mineola, N.Y.) finish sixth in a talented field in the event on Friday at the Penn Relays.
Astle won the shot with a distance of 51 feet, 3.75 inches and had a personal best discus throw of 153 feet, 10 inches.
Dartmouth won the meet in Amherst with 159 points. UMass was second with 144.25, UMass Lowell was third with 93.75 and UNH had 88.75 points. Central Connecticut was fifth at 75.50, Vermont had 69 points and Maine 65.75.

MEET RESULTS
At the Penn Relays:
- The DMR team finished in 9:57.10.
- UNH won the DMR at the Colonial Relays in 10:01.10 to open the season.
- Oklahoma won the DMR at Penn Relays and was followed by La Salle, Pittsburgh, Providence and American.
- George Washington and Stony Brook were seventh and eighth behind UNH.
Among the other top results at UMass:
- Junior Joel Nkounkou (Dover, N.H.) was second in the 110 hurdles in 15.17 seconds and was also third in the high jump.
- Junior Nicholas Ritzo (Rye, N.H.) was third in the shot put at 49 feet, 11.75 inches.
- Junior Alex Tamulonis (Mason, N.H.) was third in the pole vault at 14 feet, 11 inches.
- Sophomore Jon Chapman (Warwick, R.I.) was third in the hammer at 166 feet, 11 inches.
- Sophomore Eric Brogioli (Milford, Mass.) was fourth in the hammer.
- Freshman Mitchell Carter (Fall River, Mass.) was fourth in the triple jump.
