Quick Hitters
The No. 18/16 UNH football team enters Saturday's game against No. 7/9 Elon University with a 6-3 overall record that includes 4-2 in the CAA and 4-0 at home (2-0 in conference home games).
The Wildcats scored a touchdown on their first three possessions of the game – 75, 99 and 90 yards – to build a 21-7 lead en route to a 35-16 victory at William & Mary last Saturday. It was the UNH's first win at Zable Stadium since 1998.
UNH recorded a season-high 511 yards of total offense (406 passing,105 rushing) and the 'Cats punted just one time, a season low.
Elon University (Elon, N.C.) enters Saturday's game with an 8-1 overall record that includes 6-0 in the CAA and 4-1 on the road (3-0 in conference road games), as well as 4-0 against nationally-ranked teams (2-0 on the road). The Phoenix has won eight consecutive games since a season-opening 47-13 loss at Toledo of the FBS.
New Hampshire has won all three lifetime meetings against Elon with two road wins and one at home. Last year at Rhodes Stadium, Morgan Ellman kicked a 35-yard field goal with 2:09 remaining and Prince Smith, Jr. broke up a fourth-down pass in the end zone with 36 seconds to play to lead the UNH football team to a 13-10 come-from-behind victory.
Junior QB Trevor Knight was named CAA Football Offensive Player of the Week this past Monday, which marked the second time this year he received that accolade. He was also the recipient of this week's New England Football Writers Gold Helmet on Wednesday.
Neil O'Connor caught seven passes for 192 yards and one TD – all in the first three quarters – at W&M.
Quinlen Dean has been UNH's leading tackler in 6 of 9 games, including eight stops last week against the Tribe. Overall, he has made 79 stops and his 54 solo tackles are more than all other Wildcats have total tackles.
Since the start of the 2007 season, UNH has a 55-8 record at home for an .873 win percentage. New Hampshire is 4-0 in The Dungeon this season and, dating back to last year, has won five consecutive home games.
The Wildcats have outscored the opposition 81-22 in the first quarter and 89-64 in the second quarter for a first-half margin of 170-86.
Nineteenth-year head coach Sean McDonnell recorded his 94th career victory in CAA conference play Nov. 4 with UNH's 35-16 win against William & Mary at Zable Stadium. McDonnell's predecessor, Bill Bowes, is No. 3 at 97 career conference wins.
