Defense Shines, No. 18 'Cats Upset No. 7 Elon, 16-6

DURHAM, N.H. – Junior linebacker Jared Kuehl (Plymouth, N.H.) led an impressive defensive performance and junior quarterback Trevor Knight (Amherst, N.H.) completed 32 of his 42 passes for 271 yards and a touchdown to lead No. 18 New Hampshire to a 16-6 triumph over No. 7 Elon in front of a Salute to Service crowd of 7,294 in Wildcat Stadium on Saturday.
The Wildcats improved to 7-3 overall and 5-2 in the Colonial Athletic Association. They snapped Elon's win streak at eight games and handed the Phoenix their first league loss of the season. Elon is 8-2 overall and 6-1 in the CAA.
UNH has one regular season game remaining at Albany on Saturday. Albany dropped to 4-6 overall and 1-6 in the CAA with a 22-3 loss at Delaware on Saturday.
Kuehl had six tackles including a quarterback sack and also had a fumble recovery.
The Wildcats opened a 16-0 lead before giving up a touchdown with just over three minutes to play.
Elon was averaging 24.4 point a game coming into Saturday. The Wildcats heled the Phoenix to 31 yards rushing and 315 yards of total offense. Elon had averaged 187.9 rushing yards and 394 total yards a game.

1st QUARTER
- UNH had 107 yards of offense and Elon 75 in a scoreless first period.
2ND QUARTER
- Knight connected with sophomore tight end Justin Malone-Woods (San Diego, Calif.) for an 11-yard TD pass with 3:32 left in the period.
- Senior Morgan Ellman (Scotch Plains, N.J.) kicked the extra point.
- UNH had 205 yards of offense in the first half.
- Elon had 165 yards of offense in the half.
- It was the first time this year that Elon was held scoreless in the first half.
- Knight was 19 for 24 in the first half for 188 yards.
3RD QUARTER
- The Wildcats opened the half with a 17-play, 84-yard scoring drive that took 8 minutes, 47 seconds.
- Sophomore Evan Gray (Centreville, Va.) capped it with a 2-yard scoring run with 6:08 left.
- A Knight pass for the two-point conversion was intercepted and it was 13-0.
- Junior linebacker Jared Kuehl recovered an Elon fumble two plays later.
- Elon forced a Max Pedinoff (Newtown, Pa.) punt that was fumbled and Nick Lubischer (Red Bank, N.J.) recovered.
- The Wildcats took advantage of the turnover with Pedinoff's 31-yard field goal to make it 16-0 with 2:32 left.
4TH QUARTER
- Davis Cheek connected with De'Sean McNair for a 23-yard TD pass to break up the shutout.
- Cheek's conversion pass was incomplete and UNH led 16-6 with 3:16 left.
'CAT NIPS
- The touchdown for Malone-Woods was his first of the season and second of his career.
- Gray's touchdown was his sixth of the season and seventh of his career.
- Pedinoff made one 31-yard field goal and missed another.
- He has made four of his six field goal attempts this season.
- Sophomore Malik Love (Alcoa, Tenn.) had 11 catches for 64 yards.
- Junior Kieran Presley (Amherst, Mass.) had a pair of catches for 58 yards.
- Junior Neil O'Connor (Leominster, Mass.) had eight catches for 74 yards.
- Sophomore defensive back Prince Smith, Jr. (Philadelphia, Pa.) and sophomore linebacker Quinlen Dean (Greenbelt, Md.) each had seven tackles to lead the Wildcats.
- Junior defensive end Jae'Wuan Horton (Stafford, Va.) had the other quarterback sack to go with Kuehl's.
- Senior defensive tackle Rick Holt (Portsmouth, N.H.) had six tackles and a fumble recovery.
- Elon was called for two penalties for 17 yards.
- But Kuehl drew a holding penalty on a pass play in the second quarter that negated an Elon touchdown.
- UNH had a 38:17 to 21:43 edge in time of possession.
- The Wildcats came up with three Elon turnovers.
- UNH turned the ball over once.
- Gray led UNH rushers with 18 carries for 38 yards.
- Sophomore safety Pop Lacey (Reading, Pa.) and running backs Donald Goodrich (York, Maine) and Jerickson Fedrick (Salem, N.H.) were among the Wildcats who missed the game because of injury.
