Bensaia, Bossi Named to East Division All-Conference Team; van den Brekel on All-Rookie Team
LOWELL, Mass. – Gianna Bensaia (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and Rachel Bossi (Chelmsford, Mass.) of the University of New Hampshire field hockey team were named to the East Division All-Conference Team at Wednesday night's annual America East conference banquet. Teammate Bloem van den Brekel (Eindhoven, Netherlands) was an All-Rookie Team honoree.
Bensaia, an East Division All-Conference Team selection for the second consecutive year, started all 18 regular-season games. The second-year senior captain ranks second on the team in assists (five) and third in points (11); her other stats include three goals and two game-winning goals. As a linchpin in the midfield and important cog on both penalty corner units, Bensaia's contributions extend beyond those statistics.
In eight America East games, Bensaia tallied two goals and three assists for eight points. She scored the game-winning goal in both matchups against UMass Lowell, and that included an overtime tally on the road. Bensaia recorded a point in 6 of 9 games spanning Sept. 22 to Oct. 22 with 3-4-10 in that span. She was named to the NFHCA Senior Game roster in late October.
Bossi is another midfielder who has started every game this season and has recorded nine points on three goals and three assists. The junior scored two game-winning goals – both in overtime – against Northeastern University in the season opener and at nationally-ranked University of Iowa. Bossi set up the game-winning goal in the home game against University of Vermont and also assisted on the game-tying goal that led to Bensaia's OT game winner at UMass Lowell.
van den Brekel, a two-time America East Rookie of the Week selection, is tied atop the UNH leaderboard in points (22) with seven goals and a team-leading eight assists. With those numbers, she is No. 6 in the conference in assists per game. The freshman forward also leads the Wildcats in both game-winning goals (three) – including the game winner in last Sunday's regular-season finale at nationally-ranked University of Maine – and shots (45).
van den Brekel had an impressive second half of the season that included five goals and four assists for 14 points in eight America East games. She ended the regular season with a four-game point streak in which she recorded nine points on three goals and three assists, and that included one-goal, one-assist efforts against both Dartmouth College and nationally-ranked University at Albany. van den Brekel has tallied a point eight of the last nine games and 9 of 11.
New Hampshire begins postseason play Nov. 3 (12 p.m.) with an America East quarterfinal matchup against Cal. The entire conference tournament is being played at UMass Lowell's Cushing Field.
