Women’s Track & Field Topples Maine, 113-73, to Start 2016 Season

DURHAM, N.H. – Senior Lauren Perrodin (Coral Springs, Fla.) won three gold medals as the University of New Hampshire women's track & field team defeated the University of Maine, Saturday afternoon at Paul Sweet Oval.
Perrodin placed first overall in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.28 seconds. She followed that finish with a 200-meter dash time of 26.52 seconds for her second gold medal. The Florida native was also a part of the 4x400-meter relay group who took gold with a time of 4:05.64. The team consisted of Perrodin, junior Alyson Messina (Plymouth, Mass.), sophomore Tessa Artruc (Livonia, N.Y.) and Stephanie DiTraglia. Artruc also won gold in the high jump with a height of 5 feet, 5.00 inches.
Sophomore Elinor Purrier (Montgomery, Vt.) returns to the track after earning All-American honors at the NCAA outdoor track & field championships last spring. She finished first overall in the 3,000-meter race against five competitors.
In the remaining racing events, Messina won gold in the 500-meter run with a time of 1:18.01. Sophomore Danielle Gajewski (Danville, N.H.) ran the 800-meter dash in 2:27.18 for first overall and junior Amanda Szymanski (Londonderry, N.H.) broke the 1,000-meter race's tape in 3:00.13 for first place. Additionally, senior Cassie Kruse (Hampshire, Ill.) recorded the fastest time in the one mile run, wrapping up the event in 4:57.56.
Junior Crista Hargbol recorded an 8.91-second time in the 55-meter hurdles for first overall before the UNH 4x800-meter relay team won gold with a time of 9:45.72. Senior Alex Giese (Franklin, Mass.), sophomore Julia Shorter (Amesbury, Mass.), Szymanski and Kruse all competed in the event.
Lastly, sophomore Mary Mullen (Loudon, N.H.) competed in the weight throw, tossing the weight to a distance of 50 feet, 8.25 inches to take the gold medal as the only athlete to toss greater than 49 feet.
The Wildcats will compete Saturday, Dec. 12 at the Jay Carisella Invitational (10 a.m.) in Boston.
