CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- Sophomore guard Aliza Simpson (Londonderry, N.H.) posted a game-high 12 points, but the University of New Hampshire women's basketball team was defeated by Boston College 71-51 at Conte Forum on Sunday afternoon.
The Wildcats' overall record slips to 6-4 in the non-conference setback. Boston College improves to 8-1.
Simpson knocked down all four of her shots from the floor, including two from beyond the arc. She also went 2-for-2 from the free throw line. Senior guard Elizabeth Belanger (Acton, Mass.) turned in 11 points, five rebounds, three assists and a steal. Classmate Corinne Coia (North Smithfield, R.I.) led the Wildcats on the glass with eight rebounds.
New Hampshire was held to 31.1 percent (19 of 54) shooting from the floor, but poured in 9 of 12 (75.0 percent) from the free throw line. UNH won the battle on the boards, ripping down 33 rebounds in comparison to BC's 31.
Rookie center Mariella Fasoula paced the Eagles' offense with 11 points. Sophomore center Katie Quandt bolstered the scoring effort with 10 points off the bench. Junior guard Kelly Hughes chipped in eight points. Fasoula and Quant combined for 11 rebounds and five blocks.
Boston College drilled 29 of 52 (55.8 percent) from the field and 10 of 11 (90.9 percent) from the charity stripe. However, the Eagles were stifled from 3-point range, converting just 3 of 14 (21.4 percent) attempts. Fasoula and Quant combined for 5 of Boston College's six blocks.
Neither team could establish a lead out of the chute as the opening quarter featured five tied scores and two lead changes. Alexa Coulombe started the scoring for the Eagles with a layup, but Carlie Pogue (Cincinnati, Ohio) immediately responded on the next possession with a turnaround jumper. After trading scores, UNH took the lead with a 10-foot jumper by Belanger with 5:59 left in the first quarter. BC kept pace with UNH in the scoring column as the score increased to 10 apiece. Anderson dialed up a 3-pointer from the right wing as the Wildcats led the Eagles 13-10 with 3:28 remaining in the frame. Boston College engineered a 6-0 run, carving out a 16-13 edge. A pair of free throws by Stephanie Spoto (Pittsford, N.Y.) made it a one-point game after 10 minutes played.
Boston College forged together three lengthy runs to distance themselves from New Hampshire in the second stanza. Daley knocked down a triple to spark a 10-0 run for the Eagles. Sophomore guard Peyton Booth (Wadsworth, Ohio) interrupted the Eagles' scoring flurry by drawing a foul and hitting both free throws. However, BC rattled off six more points to lead 34-19 with 4:19 showing in the second quarter. Junior guard Kristen Anderson (Greene, Maine) tried to jumpstart the UNH offense with back-to-back jumpers. Despite her efforts, the Eagles tacked on six more points to enter the locker rooms with a 40-23 advantage.
The Wildcats started off strong to begin the third quarter. After a made free throw by Coia, the blue and white followed with scores from Belanger and Simpson. Boston College countered with baskets from Martina Mosetti and Coulombe as the home team owned a 44-29 lead with 6:06 left in the quarter. UNH added scores from freshman center Ashley Storey (Cumberland, Maine) and Simpson late in the frame, but the Eagles owned a 20-point cushion at 56-36 entering the final 10 minutes.
New Hampshire turned to Simpson again for scoring in the final quarter of play as the guard sunk a pair of baskets early, but Boston College matched the scoring. Belanger connected on a 3-pointer as the 'Cats aimed to rally with 5:43 left in regulation, looking up at a 60-43 deficit. However, the Eagles maintained their double-digit cushion for the rest of the way and handed the Wildcats the 71-51 setback.
New Hampshire continues its road swing at Bryant University on Sunday, Dec. 20 (1 p.m.). UNH is back at Lundholm Gymnasium on Wednesday, Jan. 13 (12 p.m.) against the University at Albany for Education Day. For tickets, please visit UNHWildcats.com/tickets or call (603) 862-4000.
