DURHAM, N.H. – Emma Compagna (Canton, Mass.) and Taylor Scafidi (Waltham, Mass.) scored second-half goals, but the University of New Hampshire field hockey team's comeback fell short in Sunday afternoon's 4-2 loss to 10th-ranked Boston College at Memorial Field.
UNH, which had been unbeaten in four home games this season, is now 5-7 overall and 1-5 against nationally-ranked teams. BC moves to 7-6 despite being outshot 14-12 and yielding a 6-5 edge in penalty corners.
It marked the first goal of the season for both Compagna and Scafidi, and Katie Audino (Severn, Md.) was credited with her first career assist. Melissa Rize (Severn, Md.) made all five of her saves in the second half.
Eryn McCoy scored a pair of first-half goals and Frederique Haverhals had a pair of assists to propel the Eagles' attack. Kelcie Hromisin and Lucy Lytle tallied the other goals. Leah Settipane was credited with six saves and Alyssa Olenick made a defensive save.
UNH generated a dangerous scoring chance in the sixth minute when an entry pass off the stick of Lindsey Nerbronne (Bow, N.H.) was corralled by Meg Flatley (Townsend, Mass.) on the left side. Flatley centered to Lynne Lehman (Landisburg, Pa.) but the Eagles' defense flocked to the ball to deny a shot.
One minute later on a penalty corner, a series of Wildcat passes produced Nerbonne's blast from the right side that was blocked away by a defender. Moments later, Chandler Giese (Trappe, Pa.) carried the ball into the top left and fired a shot through traffic that Settipane kicked away.
In the 13th minute, Audino stole the ball at the 25 and advanced to the top right. Her low drive was also blocked and Settipane came off the goal line to clear the ball.
The Eagles converted a penalty corner into a 1-0 lead at 14:08 when McCoy's direct shot deflected off a defender, bounced toward the cage and a second deflection off a defender's stick sent the ball over Rize. The battery of insert Haverhals and stick-stop Chelcie Mendonca was credited with assists.
With just under 11 minutes remaining in the first half, Nerbonne stole the ball near the left end line and pulled the ball out to maneuver around Settipane. From 10 feet, she lifted a shot toward the open cage, but Olenick stopped the ball short of the goal line and cleared the ball to preserve the visitor's 1-0 lead.
Boston College was awarded its second corner in the waning seconds of the first half and capitalized on that opportunity to take a 2-0 lead into halftime. Haverhals inserted the ball directly to the top left and McCoy teed up a low shot inside the left post.
UNH trailed by two goals through 35 minutes despite recording the advantage in both shots (6-4) and corners (4-2).
In the 39th minute, Emily McCoy struck a bounding shot from the top right that Rize kicked out with her left leg pad. Two minutes later at the other end of the field, the UNH corner was disrupted but Flatley gained possession deep on the left side and her shot was steered stopped by Settipane.
The Eagles extended the advantage to 3-0 at 45:30 when Hromisin gained possession on the left wing inside the 25, gained speed into the circle and lifted a low liner over the sliding Rize.
New Hampshire generated a succession of shots off a penalty corner in the 48th minute. Flatley's insert went directly to the top left for Jackie Hozza (Sinking Spring, Pa.), whose shot was stopped by Settipane. Compagna corralled the rebound on the right side but Settipane made a diving save. Compagna once again collected the ball and this time she lifted a shot wide of the near post.
UNH trimmed the deficit to 3-1 at 50:25. Nerbonne carried the ball into the circle on the right side and slipped a pass to the middle, where Audino settled the ball, pivoted and struck a reverse-stick shot toward the right post that Scafidi redirected into the cage.
BC reestablished a three-goal lead, 4-1, at 54:30 off another corner when Stiekema's direct shot was deflected in by Lytle.
The Wildcats responded with a goal 20 seconds later to pull within 4-2. Flatley collected a loose ball at the 25 and cut from the top of the circle toward the left post before firing a reverse-stick shot from 10 yards that was stopped by Settipane. Compagna pulled in the rebound at the top left and blasted a shot that ricocheted off a defender's stick over Settipane's right shoulder into the cage.
In the 58th minute, Flatley once again utilized her speed to create a dangerous scoring chance. She ran down a loosed ball at midfield and fended off a defender as she advanced to the top of the circle. Flatley shifted to the right and sent a shot wide of the right post.
With just under 10 minutes to play, Emily McCoy had a quick counterattack along the right wing but Rize made a sliding blocker save on her low line drive. UNH did not record a shot the rest of the way.
New Hampshire returns to action Oct. 16 (3 p.m.) at the University of Maine. The Wildcats' next home game is Oct. 25 (1 p.m.) against the University at Albany.
