NEWTON, Mass -- Meg Flatley (Townsend, Mass.) gave the University of New Hampshire field hockey team a 1-0 lead, but sixth-ranked Boston College scored three second-half goals to rally for Sunday afternoon's 4-1 victory at Newton Field Hockey Complex.
UNH, which recorded a 15-13 shot advantage, is now 2-8 this season with four losses to nationally-ranked teaams. BC, which had the 8-4 edge in penalty corners, improved to 8-2.
"We played very good hockey," 24th-year head coach Robin Balducci said. "We battled to a tie through the first half, and we had chances and shots, especially when it was still 1-1. We just didn't finish our chances."
UNH goalkeeper Carlie Tarbell (Wakefield, Mass.) made five saves while BC counterpart Leah Settipane stopped 12 shots.
Flatley tallied her sixth goal the past four games -- and her eighth of the season -- at 20:08. Meg Carroll (Mansfield, Mass.) initiated the scoring sequence by driving along the end line and crossing the ball to Flatley.
Eryn McCoy (three goals) scored on a direct shot off a penalty corner to tie the score 1-1 at 27:27. The battery of Emma Plasteras and Katlyn Soucy set up the tally.
The score (1-1) and shots (6-6) were even through 35 minutes.
In the 46th minute, UNH was awarded a penalty corner and Lindsey Nerbonne (Bow, N.H.) was denied by Settipane. One minute later, Settipane also turned aside a shot off the stick of Lynne Lehman (Landisburg, Pa.) and Jackie Hozza (xx) fired the rebound wide. In the 48th minute, Nerbonne was once again stopped by Settipane.
The Eagles took a 2-1 lead at 55:24 when Brittany Sheenan scored off a rebound.
The 'Cats called time out at 59:52 and generated a corner in the 61st minute. Settipane preserved the one-goal cushion with a stop against Nerbonne.
BC scored on another rebound for a 3-1 advantage at 64:10 when Tarbell stopped Soucy's shot on a corner but McCoy deposited the rebound into the cage.
UNH threatened again in the 66th minute, but this time is was Emma Compagna (Canton, Mass.) denied by Settipane. The Wildcats followed with a corner and Nerbonne's shot went wide. Moments later, Flatley was also stoned by the BC goalie.
McCoy scored her third goal of the game on another penalty corner at 69:35. Plasteras was credited with her second assist.
New Hampshire returns to action Oct. 3 (3 p.m.) for the America East opener at Fairfield University. The Wildcats' next home game is Oct. 10 against University at Albany; game time at Memorial Field is 3 p.m.
