PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Meg Flatley (Townsend, Mass.) gave the University of New Hampshire field hockey team an early 1-0 lead, but Providence College rallied to record a 3-1 victory Friday night at Lennon Family Field.
UNH, which recorded a 13-8 shot advantage that included 10-3 in the first half, is now 1-6 while PC improved to 4-3.
"We played a great first half, just really great hockey," UNH 24th-year head coach Robin Balducci said. "Providence came back and the second half was even. We had our chances, but struggled to finish and were a little unlucky when we hit the post on a corner."
UNH goalkeeper Carlie Tarbell (Wakefield, Mass.) was credited with two saves, both in the second half. PC counterpart Deidra Clymer made six of her nine saves in the first half. Henni Tietze led the Friars' offense with an assist on the game-winning goal and a penalty-stroke goal with 20 seconds remaining to secure the victory.
Flatley scored on the game's first shot at 3:37 when she advanced down the right sideline into the circle. She now has a team-high eight points and is tied with Lindsey Nerbonne (Bow, N.H.), who recorded a game-high four shots vs. PC, atop the Wildcats' leaderboard in goals with three.
New Hampshire generated extended pressure with five shots in a span of less than 2 minutes, 30 seconds. Clymer denied Aggie Sutherland (Dauphin, Pa.) in the 16th minute, then also turned away bids by Nerbonne and Gianna Bensaia (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) in the 17th minute. UNH was awarded a penalty corner moments later, but Nerbonne's shot ricocheted off the post and Jackie Hozza (Sinking Spring, Pa.) was stoned by Clymer off the rebound.
The Friars pulled even, 1-1, by capitalizing on their first corner of the night. Emily Matthews inserted the ball and Steph Guglielmo's shot caromed off the post, but Matthews corralled the ball off the rebound and shot it into the cage at 27:11.
UNH continued to pressure, however, as Meg Carroll (Mansfield, Mass.) fired a shot stopped by Clymer in the 29th minute and Bensaia's shot went wide in the 32nd minute.
PC came out strong in the second half and earned a corner in the 39th minute that yielded a shot by Tietze that Tarbell directed away, and seconds later Megan Hamilton's shot went wide of the cage.
The 'Cats pressured in 47th minute but Clymer kept the score deadlocked at 1 by denying Flatley. UNH was awarded a corner less than a minute later and this time a shot off the stick of Ashley Mendonca (Brampton, Ontario) was stopped by the PC goalie.
At the other end of the field, Tarbell thwarted the home team's bid on a penalty corner with a save against Salene Shaffer. UNH countered and advanced the ball inside the circle, but once again Clymer was up to the task, denying Flatley.
Hamilton gave Providence a 2-1 lead at 59:31 when she collected Tietze's long hit from midfield and beat Tarbell in a 1v1 situation.
UNH called time out at that point, and neither team recorded a shot or corner until the Wildcats were awarded a corner in the 67th minute. They did not register a shot, however, and PC called its timeout with 2:25 remaining.
The Wildcats did not have a corner or shot the rest of the way. The Friars were awarded a penalty stroke with 20 seconds remaining in regulation and Tietze converted the shot into a goal and 3-1 advantage.
New Hampshire returns to action Sept. 21 at home against Hofstra University. Game time at Memorial Field is 12 p.m.
