LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Meg Flatley (Townsend, Mass.) and Lindsey Nerbonne (Bow, N.H.) both scored a goal for the University of New Hampshire field hockey team, but Indiana University rallied from each of those one-goal deficits to record a 3-2 victory Friday evening at the University of Louisville's Trager Stadium.
IU (1-0) scored all three of its goals – all off the stick of Audra Heilman – in the second half to overcome a 1-0 halftime deficit. UNH (0-1) was outshot 17-8.
UNH goalkeeper Carlie Tarbell (Wakefield, Mass.) finished with seven saves while IU counterpart Maggie Olson recorded all four of her saves in the second half.
The Hoosiers generated the first pressure of the game in the fifth minute with Rachel Stauffer hitting a shot wide of the cage, and one minute later Caitlin Bearish's bid was turned aside by Tarbell.
UNH took a 1-0 lead on its first shot of the game at 10:35 on a goal by Flatley, last year's team leader in that stat with 16 goals. Emma Compagna (Canton, Mass.) was credited with an assist.
Tarbell preserved that one-goal lead in the 27th minute with a save against Nicole Volgraf. Two minutes later, Kate Barber's shot ricocheted off the post. IU was awarded a penalty corner with three minutes remaining in the first half and generated a shot by Sydney Supica, but Tarbell made her third – and final – save of the half to send the 'Cats into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
Indiana earned another corner one minute into the second half, and this time Tarbell turned aside Karen Lorite. IU was awarded a corner, however, and this time Lorite's shot was off target.
UNH responded with pressure inside the 25 in the 45th minute that produced a shot by Gianna Bensaia (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) that was stopped by Olson. Two minutes later, Meg Carroll (Mansfield, Mass.) sent the ball wide of the cage.
IU once again recorded consecutive corners in the 49th minute. Tarbell stoned Heilman on the first, but the Hoosier capitalized on the next corner to tie the score, 1-1, at 49:34. Lorite tallied an assist as Heilman deflected her hit into the cage.
Less than two minutes later, the Wildcats converted a corner into a goal to regain the lead, 2-1, at 51:30. Lynne Lehman (Landisburg, Pa.) pushed the ball into play and Nerbonne, a sophomore transfer from Syracuse University, scored her first goal as a 'Cat by depositing her own rebound into the cage.
Heilman struck again – Tarbell stopped her initial shot – at 54:10 as the teams combined for three goals in a span of 4:36 and pushed the score to 2-2.
Flatley was denied by Olson in the 57th minute and IU quickly counterattacked but Tarbell preserved the tie with a save against Morgan Dye.
UNH earned another corner at 62:40, but Joyce lifted a shot over the crossbar.
Heilman scored on another redirection – this time off Stauffer's blast – to give the Hoosiers their first lead of the game, 3-2, at 68:11.
The Wildcats called time out but did not record a shot the final 1:49 of the game.
New Hampshire returns to action Aug. 31 (1 p.m.) at the University of Louisville. The Wildcats' home opener is Sept. 5 (3 p.m.) against Drexel University.
