DURHAM, N.H. – Kirsten Bates (Calgary, Alberta) recorded a season-high 19 kills, including the 1,000th of her career, and Lindsay Fogarty (Pleasonton, Calif.) tallied a career-high 26 kills to rally the University of New Hampshire volleyball team to a 3-2 victory against Stony Brook University in Saturday afternoon's America East action at Lundholm Gymnasium. The set scores were 23-25, 20-25, 25-20, 25-17,15-10.

UNH won its third consecutive match to improve to 12-14 overall and 4-5 in America East. Stony Brook, which recorded a five-set home win against the Wildcats a month ago, ends the regular season at 13-13, 5-5.

Bates entered the match with 994 career kills and inched closer to the milestone with one kill in the opening set. She quickly tallied three kills early in Set 2, then recorded kills on UNH's 10th and 11th points to become the sixth UNH player to attain the 1,000-kill milestone. Bates now has 1,013 kills in her four-year career.

SBU won the first two sets, but UNH rallied to win the next two to force a decisive Set 5. Neither team led by more than one point when the team changed sides of the court with the Seawolves leading 8-7. The Wildcats won the next three points, however, to take a 10-8 advantage. The visitors rallied to tie the score, 10-10, but then consecutive kills by Fogarty gave New Hampshire a 12-10 edge and prompted SBU to call time out.

UNH's momentum would not be slowed, however, as Fogarty combined with Starsha Tunstall (East Providence, R.I.) on a block to extend the advantage to three points and another Fogarty kill gave the 'Cats match point at 14-10. Tunstall then recorded a solo block to complete the comeback.

In addition to the career-high 26 kills, which marked the highest total by a Wildcat since Oct. 5, 2007 (Bates, 28), Fogarty had a . 371 hitting percentage, two service aces and seven digs. Bates hit at a .292 clip and had 11 digs. Tunstall's numbers included seven kills and seven blocks.

Kate Uitti (Pinckney, Mich.) finished with a season-high 50 assists to quarterback the attack while Sara Heldman (Greenwood, Ind.) recorded a career-high 38 digs.

SBU was led by Harmonie Calinda, who tallied 21 kills and 19 digs. Lisa Doremus (13 kills), Ashley Headen (13 kills, four blocks) and Lindsey Gordon (12 kills, three blocks) also had notable efforts. Jeannette Gibbs had a team-high 20 digs and Corinne Perry tallied 49 assists.

In Set 1, the score was tied at 16 when the Seawolves won three consecutive points as part of a 5-1 run to take a 21-17 lead. SBU edged closer to winning the opening set at 23-18, but UNH went on a 3-0 spurt to close within 23-21. The 'Cats lost the next point and then, facing set point, won the next two points to pull within 24-23. Calinda's seventh kill of the set, however, gave the Seawolves a 1-0 lead in the match.

In the second set, Bates' three kills sparked UNH to a 5-4 lead. The visitors responded with six consecutive points – three on kills by Doremus – to built a 10-5 advantage. New Hampshire, behind three Fogarty kills, won four of the next five points to trim the deficit to 11-9. SBU responded with a 4-1 run to reestablish a five-point lead.

Bates then recorded her 1,000th career kill and combined with Tunstall on a block, then an Amy Keding (Northbrook, Ill.) kill lifted the 'Cats within 15-13. The Seawolves called a timeout, then went on another 4-1 spurt to build a 19-14 lead.

UNH surged within 21-20, but the rally was quelled with back-to-back kills by Doremus and Headen as well as ace by Doremus.

In Set 3, neither team led by more than two points with the score tied, 12-12. Fogarty then shifted momentum in UNH's favor with three consecutive Fogarty kills, and then a pair of Bates kills preceded another Fogarty kill in part of an 8-0 run that gave the Wildcats a 19-12 lead.

Stony Brook won seven of the next eight points, however, to close within 20-19. UNH won the next four points, however, to regain control and move within set point at 24-19. One point later, Bates' seventh kill of the set extended the match to a fourth set.

The duo of Bates and Fogarty continued to lead UNH's comeback in the fourth set, as they combined for 11 kills and just one hitting error on 22 attacks for a .455 hitting percentage.

Set 4 opened with a Bates kill, Tunstall kill and Fogarty ace to give the 'Cats a 3-0 lead. The scored advanced to 7-4 in favor of New Hampshire and a Wildcats' three-point run extended the margin to 10-4.

SBU called time out and won the next two points and then the teams traded points to move the score to 11-7. Kills by Tunstall and Bates led a 5-0 spurt that pushed UNH's lead to 16-7, but the visitors responded with five consecutive points to pull within 16-12.

Back-to-back kills by Bates put the 'Cats in front, 18-12, and her next two kills gave the 'Cats leads of 19-13 and 21-14. Another Fogarty kill and a service ace by Jayde Huxtable (St. Charles, Ill.) capped a 4-0 run that gave UNH a 23-14 lead, but two more kills by Fogarty pushed the match to the fifth set.

New Hampshire concludes the regular season Nov. 15 against UMBC at Lundholm Gymnasium. The Senior Day match begins at 1 p.m. and the four UNH seniors will be recognized beforehand.
