VOLLEYBALL DROPS CONFERENCE OPENER, 3-1, TO BINGHAMTON

Fogarty (Pleasanton, Calif.) and Kirsten
Bates (Calgary, Alberta) each recorded 14 kills, but it
was not enough as the University of New Hampshire volleyball team
dropped its America East opener to Binghamton University, 3-1, on
Friday night at Lundholm Gymnasium.
With the loss, the Wildcats fall to 8-10 overall with a 0-1 mark
in America East. Binghamton is now 9-8 overall, 1-0 in conference.
The set scores were 20-25, 25-10, 25-21 and 25-22.
Bates also added a match-best 19 digs and two service aces.
Pauline Acres (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) chipped in
with eight kills, 10 digs and a block, while Justine
Elliott (Mitchellville, Md.) added six kills. Kate
Uitti (Pinckney, Mich.) dished out a team-best 38 assists,
while defensively Sara Heldman (Greenwood, Ind.)
and Uitti registered 10 digs.
The Wildcats opened the match by capturing the first set, a set
they never trailed in. New Hampshire jumped out to a 6-2 lead and
stretch the lead to 15-8. The Bearcats would cut into the lead, but
could get no closer than four throughout the second half of the
set. The Wildcats hit at a team-best .208 clip with 14 kills. In
the second set, Binghamton sprinted out to a 6-0 lead and extended
its lead to 13-3. UNH could to little to chip away at the
Bearcats' lead as they went on to capture a 25-10 win.
Binghamton once again jumped out to an early lead in the third set
scoring nine of the first 11 points. Trailing 9-2, UNH scored three
straight to cut it to 9-5. A mini 4-0 run for the Bearcats made it
13-5. New Hampshire would cut into the lead with a 6-1 run to make
it 14-11, but could get no closer despite fighting off set point on
three occasions during the set. The fourth and final set was
back-and-forth throughout. UNH build an 8-5 lead before a 6-1
Bearcat rally made it 11-9. Binghamton was clinging to a 13-12 lead
before three-straight points made it 16-12. The Wildcats responded
with six-straight of its own to take an 18-16 lead heading into a
Binghamton timeout. The Bearcats rallied from out of the timeout
with a 4-0 run to take a 20-18 lead before a New Hampshire timeout.
The timeout induced a 3-0 spurt to make it 21-20 Wildcats. However,
in the end Binghamton scored five of the final six points of the
match to earn the victory.
UNH returns to action when it plays host to the America East foe
University at Albany on Sunday (Oct. 4); start time at Lundholm

Pink” Breast Cancer Awareness event. Contributions will be
taken at the game to raise funds to support Breast Cancer education
programs and research efforts. These contributions will assist
Side-Out in its on going mission to raise money and awareness about
Breast Cancer.
