BOSTON –
Hayley Rausch (Severna Park, Md.) scored in the
opening minute of the game, but the University of New Hampshire
field hockey team was defeated 2-1 by Boston University at Jack
Barry Field on Sunday afternoon.
The loss snaps UNH's three-game winning streak and moves the
Wildcats to 8-6 overall, 1-2 in America East. BU improves to 7-8,
3-0.
UNH quickly took a 1-0 lead when Rausch scored 46 seconds into the
game. Meg Shea (Melrose, Mass.), with a pass from
the right side to Rausch in front of the cage, was credited with an
assist to extend her point-scoring streak to 14 games.
The Terriers were awarded a penalty corner in the 16th minute, but
UNH goalkeeper Katherine Nagengast (Westborough,
Mass.) denied Nikki Lloyd on the initial shot and Nicole van
Oosterom off the rebound. BU generated another corner in the next
minute and Nagengast turned aside a shot by Jacinda McLeod.
UNH took that 1-0 advantage into halftime despite BU's 6-4
shot advantage and 3-2 edge in penalty corners.
BU pulled even, 1-1, at 51:56 when Kali Cardoza scored off a pass
from Rachael White. The Terriers took a 2-1 lead at 60:11 on van
Oosterom's goal off a rebound on a penalty corner.
BU finished the game with the edge in both shots (12-4) and
corners (8-3).
Nagengast was credited with six saves, all in the first half.
BU's Amanda Smith stopped two shots.
“We came out great in the first half and played very
well,” 19th-year head coach Robin Balducci said. “In
the second half we had opportunities but didn't
finish.”
New Hampshire returns to action Oct. 18 at home against
ninth-ranked Boston College. Game time at Memorial Field is 3 p.m.
