UNH defeats Northeastern in come-from-behind fashion Saturday night
DURHAM, N.H. — The UNH women's volleyball team capped a dramatic comeback Saturday night at Lundholm Gym with a fifth-set surge to defeat Northeastern 3-2 (25-11, 17-25, 19-25, 25-22, 15-10) and complete a perfect 3-0 record in the 2025 Holly Young Invitational.
Freshman outside hitter and tournament MVP Lucy Chertock (Danville, Calif.) led the Wildcats (3-0) with 19 kills and a .395 hitting percentage, while junior middle blocker and all-tournament team member Rachel Grier (Dublin, Calif.) added 12 kills and five blocks. Freshman Dylan Hunt (Pickerington, Ohio) delivered six kills and two aces, including the match-winner in the decisive fifth set.
UNH dominated the opening frame but dropped the next two as Northeastern (2-1) found rhythm behind Jane Nelson and all-tournament teamer Beatrice Gennari, who combined for 23 kills. Facing elimination, the Wildcats rallied in the fourth and carried that momentum into the fifth.
In the final set, the 'Cats raced out to a 7-2 lead behind a balanced attack and clutch serving from senior libero Avery LePore (Franklin, Tenn.), who added a service ace and a pinpoint assist to Chertock for a kill. Hunt opened the set with a kill and followed with another off a feed from junior Jessica Shattles (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.), who finished with 30 assists and nine digs.
Chertock added two more kills in the fifth, and Grier delivered a service ace to push the lead to 11-8. Senior outside hitter and all-tournament team representative Lindsey Kriendler (Houston, Texas) and freshman middle blocker Varvara Zvereva (Moscow, Russia) teamed up for a block to stall the Huskies' momentum. Hunt sealed the match with a kill off a Shattles set, sending the home crowd of 397 into celebration.
UNH finished with a .320 hitting percentage and 11 team blocks, compared to Northeastern's .290 and five blocks. The Wildcats also held a 7-4 edge in service aces and committed fewer errors overall.
UNH returns to action Wednesday, Sept. 3, with a 7 p.m. non-conference matchup against New Haven at Lundholm Gym.
