Grove, Hohnbaum, Shertock help Wildcats rally from 1-0 deficit
DURHAM, N.H. — Senior Meredith Hohnbaum (Indianapolis, Ind.) tied for the team lead with 13 kills and hit at a .294 clip, and freshman Lucy Chertock (Danville, Calif.) also notched 13 kills to go along with 16 digs and four blocks to lead the UNH volleyball team to Wednesday night's 3-1 non-conference win against New Haven at Lundholm Gym. The set scores were 23-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-17.
The Wildcats (4-0) dropped the opening set but responded with three straight wins, using a balanced offense and a strong defensive presence at the net to remain unbeaten and hand New Haven (0-1) an opening-game loss in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
The Chargers capitalized on UNH's early errors to take a tight 25-23 opening-set win. The Wildcats hit just .064 in the frame.
UNH responded with a sharp and focused performance in the second. The Wildcats jumped out to an early lead behind freshman Dylan Hunt (Pickerington, Ohio), who opened the set with a kill and followed it up with a service ace. Junior Jessica Shattles (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) continued to distribute the ball effectively, setting up Hohnbaum and junior Rachel Grier (Dublin, Calif.) for clean swings. Grier also added a service ace and teamed up with Hohnbaum for a key block that helped UNH build a 10-5 advantage. Senior Millie Grove (Warrington, Pa.) and Chertock each contributed kills during a mid-set run that extended the lead to double digits. New Haven struggled to respond, committing several attack errors and failing to slow down UNH's offense, which hit .286 in the frame. The Wildcats closed the set with a balanced attack and strong net play, capped by a kill from Hohnbaum to even the match at one set apiece.
The third set was a back-and-forth battle featuring eight ties and four lead changes, with both teams trading momentum swings throughout. UNH opened strong behind Hohnbaum and Hunt, who each delivered early kills off sets from Shattles. The Wildcats built a small cushion, but New Haven responded with a run of their own, fueled by kills from Lauren MacKellar and Naliah Grannell. Midway through the set, Chertock and Grove took over offensively, combining for several key kills to keep UNH in front. Grier added a service ace and a pair of kills during a critical stretch that pushed the Wildcats ahead, 18-16. New Haven clawed back to tie it, 22-22, but UNH closed the set with poise. Hohnbaum delivered her fourth kill of the frame, and Chertock followed with a clutch swing to make it 24-23. On set point, Grove hammered home a kill from Shattles to seal the win and give UNH a 2-1 lead in the match.
UNH came out aggressive in the fourth set, determined to close out the match. Hunt opened the scoring with a kill from Shattles, and the Wildcats never looked back. Grier and Hohnbaum combined for multiple blocks early, helping UNH build a 10-5 lead. Grove continued her strong night with several kills from the right side, while Chertock added a pair of key swings and a block. New Haven struggled offensively, hitting negative for the set (-.028), as UNH's defense forced errors and capitalized in transition. The Wildcats closed the set on a 6-2 run, capped by a kill from Grove and a service ace by Hunt to seal the match.
