UNH erases 2-1 deficit to improve to 2-0
DURHAM, N.H. — The UNH volleyball team rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Saint Peter's in a thrilling five-set match (25-10, 23-25, 21-25, 25-15, 15-9) Saturday afternoon at Lundholm Gymnasium in the Holly Young Invitational.
Freshman outside hitter Lucy Chertock (Danville, Calif.) led the Wildcats (2-0) with 21 kills and 23 points, hitting .318 on 44 attempts. She was instrumental in the decisive fifth set, recording multiple kills to help UNH pull away late. Junior middle blocker Rachel Grier (Dublin, Calif.) added 11 kills and a match-high 10 blocks, while senior outside hitter Lindsey Kriendler (Houston, Texas) chipped in 11 kills and four blocks.
New Hampshire dominated the opening set, hitting .524 and cruising to a 25-10 win. But Saint Peter's (0-2) responded with back-to-back set victories, capitalizing on UNH's attack errors and strong serving, including six aces in the second frame.
Facing elimination, the Wildcats regrouped in the fourth set behind a balanced attack and aggressive net play. Grier and freshman Dylan Hunt (Pickerington, Ohio) combined for key blocks, and Chertock delivered clutch swings to force a fifth set.
In the final frame, UNH jumped out to a 9-4 lead and never looked back. Chertock sealed the win with her final kill off a feed from junior setter Jessica Shattles (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.), who finished with 32 assists and eight digs.
UNH out-hit Saint Peter's .281 to .041 and held a 77-61 edge in total points. The Wildcats also posted 11 team blocks and 60 digs, with senior libero Avery LePore (Franklin, Tenn.) anchoring the back row with 22 digs and four service aces.
The Wildcats conclude the Holly Young Invitational versus Northeastern on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
