BOSTON – Senior captain Nicole Poukakis (Ajax, Ontario) of the University of New Hampshire field hockey team was named Offensive Player of the Week by America East on Tuesday.
Poulakis has received this accolade twice this season – she was previously honored Sept. 30 – and four times in her career.
Poulakis recorded a goal and an assist in UNH's only game last week to lead the Wildcats to a 4-2 victory against interstate rival University of Maine at Memorial Field on Oct. 10.
The forward gave UNH a 1-0 lead at 12:50 when she corralled a pass at midfield, raced past two defenders, advanced into the circle along the right endline and tucked a low shot past the goalie inside the far post.
Poulakis set up UNH's second goal at 36:50 that gave the 'Cats a 2-1 lead they would not relinquish. She chased down a bouncing ball on the right wing, advanced to the endline and centered a pass to Kay Murphy (Wrentham, Mass.), who scored her first collegiate goal.
Poulakis extended her point streak to eight games with that three-point effort. She has 10 goals and seven assists for 27 points during the streak.
Poulakis has factored in multiple goals each of the past four games and in 6 of 11 games this season.
She enters the week ranked No. 8 in the country in points per game (2.45) and 20th in both goals per game (0.91) and assists per game (0.64). With those numbers, Poulakis is atop the America East leaderboard in points per game and second in both goals and assists.
On UNH's leaderboard, she is first in both goals (10) and points (27), and is tied at the top in assists (seven).
New Hampshire returns to action Oct. 17 (6pm) at UMass Lowell. The Wildcats' next home game is the regular-season finale, a Senior Day matchup against Bryant University on Oct. 30 (3pm).
