DURHAM, N.H. -- The University of New Hampshire volleyball team earned another pair of victories on Saturday en route to the Holly Young Invitational Championship from Lundholm Gymnasium.
The Wildcats finished their season opening weekend with a 4-0 record after 3-0 sweeps of Saint Peter's and Hartford in the final day of the tournament.
UNH was paced in the late match vs. the Hawks by sophomore Marisa Armer (Bradenton, Fla.) who posted nine kills and a .533 hitting percentage, while junior outside hitter Hannah Serbousek (Fort Collins, Colo.) added seven kills and nine digs in the victory for the Wildcats. Armer was named MVP of the tournament, while Serbousek and freshman Kara Oxenknecht (Naperville, Ill.) were also selected to the Holly Young Invitational All-Tournament Team.
"I thought that our team played very well in a lot of moments," said UNH head coach Christopher Feliciano. "With that being said there is still a lot of room for growth. We will review game film this week and focus on the little things that help us improve."
In the opening match of the day, Armer and Serbousek each totaled eight kills apiece against the Peacocks. As a team, UNH hit at a .468 clip in its third win of the season. Freshman Avery LePore (Franklin, Tenn.) added 18 digs and six service aces, while Jamison White (Nashville, Tenn.) notched 12 digs and five aces in the victory.
The Wildcats home tournament this weekend is named in memory of Holly Young, a former UNH volleyball student-athlete. Young died at age 22 on January 24, 2008 after a courageous three-year battle with Ewing's Sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. Young, a Dennisport, Mass. native, was diagnosed in 2004 just after her redshirt freshman season. She missed all of the 2005 season, while in treatments, but rejoined her teammates on the sidelines in 2006.
The Wildcats return to action on Friday, September 2 at the Villanova Tournament with a 4:30 p.m. match vs. Fairfield.
