UNH Defeats Stony Brook, 24-14, on Homecoming

DURHAM, N.H. – Sophomore quarterback Max Brosmer (Roswell, Ga.) passed for 291 yards and two touchdowns to lead the University of New Hampshire football team to Saturday's 24-14 victory against Stony Brook University in front of a Homecoming crowd of 13,273 at Wildcat Stadium.
Brosmer completed 23 of 36 passes with TD throws of 5 and 10 yards. Redshirt freshman Joey Corcoran (Montreal, Quebec) was the top targes with seven catches for 96 yards and junior Kyle Lepkowski (Adamstown, Md.) had five receptions for 94 yards.
Junior running back Dylan Laube (Westhampton, N.Y.) led UNH's ground game with 20 rushes for 77 yards, including a 3-yard touchdown run.
The Wildcats' defense recorded five sacks as part of nine tackles for loss. Juniors Randall Harris (Walled Lake, Mich.) and Max Oxendine (Chester, Va.), grad student Pierce DeVaughn (Plano, Texas) and sophomore Dylan Ruiz (Kissimmee, Fla.) led the 'Cats with five tackles apiece. Ruiz finished with two tackles for loss – both sacks – and classmate Josiah Silver (Hampton, Va.) had three tackles for loss with one sack.
SBU's offense was led by Ross Tallarico, who rushed 22 times for 75 yards, caught a TD and threw a 55-yard touchdown pass. Charlie McKee, who entered the game at the start of the third quarter and completed 18 of 26 passes for 190 yards and one TD.
UNH improves to 4-2 overall and remains atop the CAA standings at 4-0; Elon is the only other undefeated team in the CAA at 3-0. SBU is now 0-5, 0-4.

FIRST QUARTER
- UNH outgained the visitors 59-13 in the scoreless first quarter.
SECOND QUARTER
- New Hampshire outscored the Seawolves 10-7 in the second quarter.
- SBU scored on the third play of the quarter when Tallarico ran the ball to the right side, pulled up and lofted a pass down the sideline that Tyler Devera pulled in for a 55-yard touchdown and 7-0 lead at 13:57.
- The Wildcats responded by advancing to the SBU 4 and trimmed the deficit to 7-3 at 10:34 when redshirt freshman Nick Mazzie (Boxford, Mass.) made a 25 yard field goal to cap an 8-play, 71-yard drive.
- UNH's defense then forced a 3-and-out, and momentum continued with the 'Cats on a 9-play, 69-yard drive capped by Laube's TD run to give the home team a 10-7 lead at 4:35.
- Brosmer was a perfect 5-for-5 for 61 yards, including consecutive completions to Corcoran for 15 and 18 yards, on the drive.
THIRD QUARTER
- UNH extended its lead to 17-7 through three quarters.
- On the opening possession of the second half, Stony Brook was limited to a 3-and-out.
- The Wildcats once again marched 69 yards on nine plays and Brosmer found freshman D.J. Linkins (District Heights, Md.) in the end zone for a 5-yard score to give UNH a 17-7 lead at 9:00.
FOURTH QUARTER
- Both teams scored a touchdown in the final 15 minutes.
- On 4th-and-2 from the UNH 33, Stony Brook was held short of the yard to gain when Oxendine tackled Devera at the 32-yard line.
- The Seawolves closed within one score, 17-14, on McKee's 10-yard touchdown pass to Tallarico to cap at 12-play, 76-yard drive at 5:01.
- On the next UNH drive, Brosmer found Adam Deese (Belmont, Mass.) on a crossing pass for a 32-yard gain that moved the ball to the SBU 15. On the next play, Brosmer rolled to the right and threw back across the field to find senior captain Brian Espanet (Hopedale, Mass.) for the touchdown and 24-14 at 2:21.
- Stony Brook quickly advance the ball into UNH territory. Facing 4th-and-6 at the UNH 31, McKee's pass fell incomplete to give possession to the Wildcats with 1:16 remaining.
- Brosmer took a knee three times to end the game.
GAME NOTEBOOK
- Stony Brook outgained UNH by one yard, 379-378. The Wildcats had the edge on the ground, 87-79, while the visitors had the edge in the air, 300-291.
- The turnover margin was even; both teams committed one turnover.
- New Hampshire had the advantage in time of possession at 33:34.
- UNH converted 6 of 15 third downs in comparison to SBU's 2-for-12; the Seawolves were also 1-for-4 on fourth downs.
