Defense Stifles Dartmouth in 14-0 Win to Claim Granite Bowl

HANOVER, N.H. – Sophomore quarterback Max Brosmer (Roswell, Ga.) passed for one touchdown and ran for another as the University of New Hampshire football team won the Granite Bowl with a 14-0 non-conference victory against Dartmouth College at Memorial Field on Saturday afternoon.
Brosmer capped the first possession of the game with a 2-yard touchdown pass to senior Brian Espanet (Hopedale, Mass.) and closed the first half with an 8-yard TD run to give the Wildcats a 14-0 lead. He finished the game completing 20 of 29 passes for 217 yards.
Sophomore running back Isaac Seide (Everett, Mass.) recorded career highs with 26 carries for 127 yards; he also caught two passes for 22 yards. Redshirt freshman Joey Corcoran (Montreal, Quebec) led UNH with six catches for 89 yards.
New Hampshire recorded its first shutout since Oct. 27, 2018, when the Wildcats won 24-0 at Villanova University. The Wildcat limited Dartmouth to 58 rushing yards and 140 passing yards for a total of 198 yards, all of which are season lows for a UNH opponent.
Grad student Pop Bush (Nocatee, Fla.) was UNH's top tackler with five, including one tackle for loss; he also recovered a fumble and had one pass breakup.
UNH won its second consecutive game to improve to 5-2 overall and is the only remaining undefeated team in CAA conference play at 4-0. Dartmouth moves to 1-4 overall.

FIRST QUARTER
- UNH needed just four plays to take a 7-0 lead at 13:05. Following a 34-yard kickoff return by sophomore Caleb Mead (Willow Grove, Pa.), Brosmer connected with Corcoran for a 58-yard gain that set up 1st-and-goal at the DC 10. On third down, Brosmer found Espanet alone in the front of the end zone for the score and redshirt freshman Nick Mazzie (Boxford, Mass.) made the PAT kick.
- The Wildcats began its next drive at the UNH 5 and methodically moved the ball downfield to the DC 25, but then lost 15 yards on the next two plays and was forced to punt to end an 18-play, 55-yard drive that consumed 10:32.
- That marked New Hampshire's longest drive of the season with regards to plays and time of possession.
SECOND QUARTER
- On a drive that started at 8:43, Dartmouth advanced the ball to the UNH 10, but on fourth down sophomore Noah Stansbury (Orange, N.J.) stopped quarterback Dylan Cadwallader for a five-yard loss on a fake field goal attempt to give possession back to the 'Cats at 3:45.
- Brosmer hit grad student Heron Maurisseau (Bellport, N.Y.) in stride down the left sideline for a 41-yard gain to advance the ball to the DC 24. On 2nd-and-goal from the DC 8, Brosmer ran a draw up the middle in which he bounced off a teammate and a defender to force his way into the end zone. Mazzie's PAT made it 14-0 with 29 seconds on the clock.
THIRD QUARTER
- On the opening possession of the second half, the Big Green moved to the UNH 32. Q Jones fumbled after a 7-yard gain and Bush fell on the loose ball to end Dartmouth's drive.
- A 30-yard punt return by senior Sean Coyne (Portsmouth, R.I.) gave UNH possession at the DC 15, but on 1st-and-goal at the DC1 Brosmer was intercepted in the end zone to end the scoring threat.
FOURTH QUARTER
- After being held to three consecutive 3-and-outs, the Dartmouth offense gained a pair of first downs to advance to the DC 28. UNH's defense held there, however, as pass breakups by Bush, sophomore Ryan Toscano (Bedford, N.H.) and Stansbury ended the Big Green possession with 1:05 remaining.
GAME NOTEBOOK
- In the first quarter, UNH ran 22 plays for 111 yards and had possession for 12:16; in comparison, Dartmouth gained 22 yards on four plays.
- New Hampshire finished with 146 rushing yards and 189 passing yards for a total of 353 yards and 33:58 in time of possession.
- UNH won the turnover battle with two takeaways and one giveaway.
- The Wildcats converted 9 of 16 first downs and was 1-for-2 0n fourth downs.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- Junior Joe Eichman (Merrimack, N.H.) had an interception for the second consecutive game; this one was on Cadwallader's Hail Mary pass at the UNH 3 to end the first half.
- Maurisseau finished with three catches for 60 yards and three rushes for 18 yards.
- Stansbury had three tackles and two pass breakups.
- Senior captain Niko Kvietkus (Southington, Conn.) and sophomore Josiah Silver (Hampton, Va.) both recorded a sack.
- Brosmer completed a pass to 10 different Wildcats.
