Almasian and Williams show strong at Maine Open Invitational on Sunday

ORONO, Maine – The University of New Hampshire women's track and field competed at the Maine Open Invitational on Sunday afternoon from New Balance Field House.
Junior Sarah Williams (Dover, N.H.) continued her outstanding throwing season for the 'Cats with victories in the weight throw (57'5.50) and the shot put (40'5.50). Freshman Olivia Chamberlain (Warnerville, N.Y.) earned the gold in the long jump with a mark of 18'4.25.
"Mel Almasian won two events for the second straight week, I am very excited about the way she is running," said UNH head coach Robert Hoppler. Sarah Williams completed a fantastic weekend with wins in the weight throw and the shot put, coming off the school record on Friday in the weight throw."
Freshman Natalie Fraser (Gilford, N.H.) took home first in the 400 meter dash at 1:01.45, while sophomore Meline Almasian (Westford, Mass.) earned the win in the 60 meter dash (8.09), while freshman Mia Taranko (Saco, Maine) placed right behind Almasian at 8.22. Almasian also took the win in the 100 meter dash with a time of 27.13.
The freshman duo of Emma York (Penacook, N.H.) and Claire Ronan (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) finished first and second, respectively, in the 800 meter run with times of 2:25.84 and 2:25.99. York's win was the first of her collegiate career for the Wildcats.
The group of York, Ronan, Cortney Lander (Franklin Lake, N.J.) and Kaitlyn Lennox (Hampton Falls, N.H.) earned the victory in the 4x400 meter relay at 4:10.77.
The Wildcats return to action on February 4 and 5 at the New England Championships hosted by the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Roxbury, Mass.
