Wildcats Win Four Events at Dartmouth Invitational

HANOVER, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire men's track & field team won four events at the Dartmouth Outdoor Invitational that was held Friday at Memorial Field. In addition to UNH and Dartmouth College, the event included the University of Vermont and UMass Lowell.
In the field events, first-place efforts were recorded by grad student Zachary Astle (Newbury, N.H.) in the shot put, junior John King Jr. (Derry, N.H.) in the javelin, and freshman Andrew Kelly (Portsmouth, N.H.) in the high jump.
On the track, senior Aidan Sullivan (Nashua, N.H.) was the fastest runner with a personal best time in the 1,500 meters.

SHOT PUT
New Hampshire took the top spot as well as third, fourth and fifth place in the shot put. Astle, who won the event at last weekend's America East Championship meet, recorded the top six marks overall on his six throws, the best of which was 53 feet, 4.25 inches on his last attempt.
Senior Jacob Dearborn (Wolfeboro, N.H.) was in third place after the first round and bested that mark on his fifth attempt but held in third place at 46-11.50. Junior Patrick Brogioli (Milford, Mass.) recorded a throw of 43-6.50 to place fourth and edge out sophomore Andrew Fleming (Acton, Mass.) by two inches.
1,500 METERS
Sullivan crossed the finish line with a personal-best winning time of 3 minutes, 47.14 seconds in the 1,500m run. He led at the end of both the first lap (44.13 seconds) and second lap (1:46.26), then entered the final lap in third place with a split of 2:48.90 that was just .33-of-a-second behind the leader. Sullivan recorded his fastest quarter-mile split of 58.25 – and the fastest by any of the 13 competitors -- in the final lap to earn the win.
Sullivan shattered his previous PR of 3:54.42 that was established April 3 at UNH.
JAVELIN
King recorded a distance of 198 feet, 9 inches on his last throw to win the javelin. His opening mark of 190-8 kept King in first place until round 5, and then he reclaimed the top spot.
HIGH JUMP
Kelly won the jump off at the height of 6-4.25 to earn first place in the high jump. He and one other competitor successfully cleared 6-3.2 but neither cleared 6-5.2, which forced the jump off.
DISCUS
The Wildcats finished 2-3 in the discus led by Brogioli's runner-up finish. He was in fifth place until the fifth round, when he jumped to second place with a throw of 139-4. Dearborn placed third with a mark of 137-11 that was recorded on his third attempt.
LONG JUMP
UNH took second and fourth place in the long jump. Senior Ryan Dutille (East Longmeadow, Mass.) recorded his top distance of 21-0 on the third attempt to finish as runner-up and junior Emmanuel Nkounkou (Dover, N.H.) recorded the fourth best mark of 19-9.75.
110-METER HURDLES
Senior Michael Monahan (Tewksbury, Mass.) edged out Vermont's Alex Parasky at the finish line to earn second place in the 110m hurdles with a clocking of 15.24 seconds.
800 METERS
The Wildcats were second and seventh in the 800m. Sophomore Kenney McElroy (West Linn, Ore.) was third after one lap with a split of 53.26, then ran a 59.27 in the second lap to sprint to second place with an overall mark of 1:52.53. Classmate Dillon Adamy (Clinton, N.J.) crossed the finish line in 1:55.04; he ran consistent splits of 57.27 and 57.77, the latter of which was the third-fastest split in the last 400m.
HAMMER
Led by Astle, UNH finished 4-7 in the hammer. Astle recorded his top mark and fourth-place finish of 170-2 on his first of six attempts, the last two of which he passed.
Brogioli climbed into fifth place with a throw of 163-5 on his last attempt. He was followed by Dearborn in sixth at 157-1 and Fleming at 148-11.
400 METERS
UNH placed fourth, sixth and seventh in the 400m. Freshman Zach Plaza (Derry, N.H.) was the top 'Cat and fourth overall with a time of 52.22. Sophomore Aidan O'Hern (Concord, N.H.) and freshman Francesco Maldari (Portsmouth, N.H.) finished in 53.75 and 54.55, respectively.
200 METERS
Freshman Aidan Sutton (Rochester, N.H.) was fourth across the finish line in the 200m with a time of 23.87.
UP NEXT
New Hampshire is scheduled to return to action May 14-15 at the New England Championships held at Central Connecticut State University.
