DURHAM, N.H. - The University of New Hampshire women's track & field program announced the signing of three new cross country runners, and also will add four other members to the 2020-21 track and field squad.
Â
A diverse class of athletes joining the Wildcats next season includes granite-stater Sarah Morin (Portsmouth, N.H.) in several events, along with jumper Mia Taranko (Saco, Maine), shot-putter Abby Chorches (Falmouth, Mass.), and hurdler/jumper Kathryn Madore (South Kingston, R.I.).
Â
Morin joins the Wildcats from Portsmouth High School and was state-champion level scorer in sprints, hurdles, pole vault, and relays. Morin will help the Wildcats out in several areas as she helped her high school team win the 2019 NHIAA DII Championship.
Â
"She is an all-around track and field athlete," comments head coach Robert Hoppler.
Â
Thorton Academy's Mia Taranko joins a growing jumps core for the Wildcats, who will primarily participate in the long jump, but will also help out in the triple, being a multi-time Maine state scorer in both events.
Â
"Mia has a lot of potential to really help us out in the jumps," says assistant coach Jacky Mendes. "I think our whole jump squad is going to be great. We've got a lot of events covered, and a lot of talent."
Â
UNH will also get jumps production out of Kathryn Madore, a triple jumper and hurdler. Madore took the Rhode Island class-b state championship in the triple jump, and is a scorer in the hurdles at the state championship as well.
Â
The final new Wildcats from this signing class is Abby Chorches, a shot-putter from Falmouth High School; Chorches brings with her some big meet experience with a scoring finish in the Massachusetts state meet, a first-place finish in the Bay State Games, and a National Title at the State Games of America.
Â
"We're excited to have Abby come and carry on the tradition of championship-level throwers at the University of New Hampshire," says Hoppler. Mendes adds "I think we're really going to take off in the throws with the addition of Abby."
Â
These new additions will help the Wildcats continue improving in all areas and continue their excellence, and their tradition of having athletes continue to compete at the highest levels in May, June, and July. Already this season the Wildcats have have two multi-eventers compete at the URI Pentathlon, and have won a home dual meet against Maine. The versatility of the class is certainly a highlight, looking towards the 2020-21 track seasons.
Â
"I think this is the most versatile class we've recruited in years," adds co-Head Coach Casey Carroll.
