The biggest news out of Durham prior to UNH's first game of the season was the announcement that 21st-year head coach Sean McDonnell took an indefinite leave of absence for health-related reasons on Aug. 26.
Ricky Santos, who rejoined the UNH staff in March as associate head coach and quarterbacks coach, was named interim head coach Aug. 26. Santos spent the past three seasons (2016-18) as the QB coach at Columbia University. From 2013-15, Santos coached UNH's wide receivers.
The next biggest news was the naming of redshirt freshman Bret Edwards as the starting quarterback. In the Blue-White Scrimmage (Aug. 25), Edwards completed his first 10 pass attempts and 18 of 19 overall for 176 yards and two touchdowns.
Max Brosmer, a true freshman, has been named the backup QB. Brosmer completed 6 of 9 passes for 99 yards and one touchdown in the intrasquad scrimmage.
New Hampshire has a 9-7 lifetime record against Holy Cross following last year's 28-0 win at Wildcat Stadium. The Crusaders prevailed 51-26 in the most recent meeting at Fitton Field (Sept. 16, 2017).
UNH has a 12-8 record in season openers the past 20 years with a breakdown of 5-0 at home and 7-8 on the road.
The Wildcats return 12 starters with an even split of six on offense and six on defense. On special teams, the starting placekicker and punter also return.
Three of the four senior captains are on the defensive side of the ball; they are cornerback Isiah Perkins, safety Pop Lacey and linebacker Michael Balsamo. On offense, running back Evan Gray is also a captain.
Lacey was named to the 2019 CAA Preseason Team. He was named to last year's CAA All-Conference Second Team.
