Tomlinson and Mazzie Lead UNH Past Monmouth, 33-20

Mazzie was perfect on the day with field goals of 42, 35, 35 and 31 yards and three PAT kicks.
Senior quarterback Seth Morgan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) completed 25 of 40 passes for 205 yards and two touchdowns. Redshirt freshman running back Denzell Gibson (Bellwood, Ill.) had 16 carries for 88 yards – both career highs – and scored his first career touchdown on an 11-yard run.
UNH's defense forced three turnovers, all on fumble recoveries, to help limit a Monmouth offense ranked No. 4 in the nation in scoring (39.2 points per game) to 20 points.
Grad student safety Wande Owens (Cooksvile, Md.) recorded a team-high eight tackles, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble. Senior safety Brendan Tighe (Lowell, Mass.) finished with seven tackles and a forced fumble. Brandon Perkins (Williamstown, N.J.) and Gavin Urda (Milford, N.H.) had the other UNH fumble recoveries.
UNH improves to 6-4 overall, 4-2 in the CAA and 3-1 at home while Monmouth is now 4-6, 2-4.

FIRST QUARTER
- On its first possession of the game, UNH marched 57 yards on nine plays and took a 7-0 lead when Morgan found Colby Ramshaw (Londonderry, N.H.) in the left flat at the 5-yard line and he turned upfield into the end zone at 8:57.
SECOND QUARTER
- The teams combined to score three touchdowns in a span of 4:21 early in the second quarter.
- Monmouth tied the score, 7-7, when Derek Robertson connected with TJ Speight on a 36-yard TD pass at 14:32.
- UNH was held to a 3-and-out in its next possession, but Monmouth's Makhi Green muffed the punt and Urda fell on the loose ball at the MU 5.
- Two plays later, Morgan hit Tomlinson in stride on an inside route in the right slot to extend UNH's lead to 14-7 at 13:21.
- Monmouth punted after a 3-and-out, but this time it was UNH's Joey Corcoran (Montreal, Quebec) who misplayed the punt and MU's Donovan Fey recovered to set up 1st-and-10 at the UNH 28.
- Then on 4th-and-1, Sone Ntoh scored on a 19-yard run to once again pull the Hawks even, 14-14, at 10:13.
- On UNH's next drive, the Wildcats advanced to the MU 18 and Mazzie capped the 10-play, 45-yard drive with a 42-yard field goal that put the 'Cats back on top, 17-14 at 5:25.
- Tighe stripped MU running back Rodney Nelson on the next play from scrimmage and Owens recovered the fumble to give New Hampshire possession at the MU 46, but the Hawks defense forced UNH to punt.
- The Wildcats got the ball back at its 30-yard line with 1:53 on the clock and Mazzie's 35-yard field goal extended the home team's lead to 20-14 with 20 seconds remaining. Morgan-to-Tomlinson combined for a 26-yard gain on 3rd-and-10 from the MU 35 to extend the drive and set up the field goal.
THIRD QUARTER
- UNH received the opening kickoff in the second half, drove 57 yards on 13 plays and held the ball for more than half the quarter as Mazzie's 35-yarder pushed the lead to 23-14 at 7:07.
- New Hampshire's defense forced a 3-and-out and then another turnover when Owens forced a fumble and Perkins scooped up the loose ball to set up 1st-and-10 at the MU 27.
- Four plays later, Gibson took a handoff up the middle for an 11-yard touchdown that extended UNH's lead to 30-14 with 14 seconds on the clock.
FOURTH QUARTER
- Robertson found Tra Neal for an 8-yard score but his pass on the 2-point conversion failed to advance the score to 30-20 at 12:12
- The Wildcats responded with a methodical 15-play, 62-yard drive that culminated with Mazzie's 31-yard field goal for a 33-20 lead at 5:02. The drive began with six consecutive run plays – the first four by Gibson for 29 yards – and the 'Cats moved into the red zone on a 17-yard pass to Tomlinson.
- Monmouth went into a hurry-up offense and advanced to the UNH 17, but four consecutive incompletions gave possession back to the 'Cats with 2:48 remaining.
- Gibson's rushes of 2 and 11 yards gave UNH a first down and the Wildcats ended the game with three consecutive kneel downs.
GAME NOTEBOOK
- UNH's defense put the clamps on MU quarterback Derek Robertson. He entered the game ranked No. 3 in the nation in passing yards per game (316.1) but was limited to 198 yards and two TDs on 17-for-34 passing.
- Robertson's favorite target, Josh Derry, was held to approximately half his season average of 100.3 receiving yards per game, which ranked No. 4 in the nation. Derry had five catches for 52 yards.
- UNH had a pair of time-consuming third quarter drives as the 'Cats had possession for 12 minutes, 14 seconds in that quarter.
- The Wildcats finished with 41:37 as its time of possession.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- Tomlinson entered the weekend ranked No. 8 in the nation in receptions per game (6.4) and No. 14 in TD receptions (seven).
- Gibson eclipsed his previous highs of 14 rushes and 54 yards, both of which were vs. Bryant.
- Myles Thomason (Montclair, N.J.) matched his high of 20 carries and finished with 58 rushing yards.
- Sean Lehane (Milford, Mass.) averaged 51.3 yards per punt with a long of 55. He entered the game ranked No. 7 in the nation in punting (45.4 yards/punt).
- Owens surpassed 250 career tackles as his eight stops increased his career total to 254.
- Ryan Toscano (Bedford, N.H.) finished with six tackles and he now has 280 for his career. UNH's top 10 list has Romande Carter (1993-96) and Brett Bashaw (1996-2000) tied at No. 9 with 297.
- Toscano recorded UNH's only sack of the game vs. Monmouth.
SERIES NOTEBOOK
- UNH has won all three meetings, including two at Wildcat Stadium, against Monmouth.
- All three matchups have been since the Hawks joined CAA Football in 2022.
