Purrier Paces 'Cats to Runner Up Finish at Pre-Conference Meet

Elinor Purrier returns to action and wins the 1500m.
AMHERST, Mass. – The University of New Hampshire men's and women's track & field teams both took second place at the annual pre-conference meet hosted by the University of Massachusetts.
Both the men's and women's teams took second to UMass, the men's team with 158 points to UMass' 164, and the women's team at 174 points to UMass' 215. The men's field also saw UMass Lowell, Dartmouth, Vermont, and Maine, while the women's field included just UMass Lowell, Maine, and Dartmouth.
The meet saw several Wildcats making their mark before the conference championship meet next weekend at UMBC, and the return of Elinor Purrier (Montgomery, Vt.) looking to build towards championship season.
Purrier lead the way for the 'Cats, taking the 1500m run in 4 minutes, 17.89 seconds, a full 22 seconds faster than the next runner. Purrier was just three seconds off her school record in the event (4:14.48). Her finish is fast enough to be ranked in the top 25 in the nation.
The 'Cats continued their domination on the track as Meg Champagne (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) won the 5000m with Angelyn Masters (Bangor, Maine) finishing right behind her in second. Champagne finished in 17:17.92 and Masters in 17:21.40. Emma Checovich (North Hampton, N.H.) took first in the 100m hurdles in 14.69 seconds while Emileigh Glode (Boxbourough, Mass.) took second in the 400m hurdles in 1:04.60.
In the field events, Checovich also shined in the long jump, taking second with a distance of 18 feet, 1.5 inches, and Alyssa Colbert (Smithfield, R.I.) won the javelin throw with a farthest throw of 128'7"¸ a new personal best.

UP NEXT:
The championship season starts next weekend with the America East Championships taking place May 5 and 6 at UMBC. Then the Wildcats will head to the New England Outdoor Championships hosted by Dartmouth on May 11 and 12, followed by the ECAC/IC4A Championships in Princeton, N.J. Those who qualify will then head to the NCAA Regional Meet in Tampa, Florida, which takes place May 24 through 26. The NCAA Outdoor Championships will be held in Eugene, Oregon June 6 through 9.

- In the 400m dash, Elise Renahan (Atkinson, N.H.) and Jessica Hackett (Dover, N.H.) finished third and fourth respectively, Renahan in 57.39 seconds, Hackett in 58.16 seconds.
- Shelby Strickland (Kennebunk, Maine) after her impressive week at the Penn Relays, tied for first in the high jump with a jump of 5'5.25".
- Kari Murnane (Byram, N.J.) took runner up in the pole vault with 11'1.75".
- The relay team of Checovich, Hackett, Renahan, and Kristen Bourque (Londonderry, N.H.) had a photo finish with the UMass Lowell relay team in the 4x100 relays, with UMass Lowell just barely edging out the 'Cats at 47.22 seconds to UNH's 47.57 seconds. This finish also just barely missed the school record of 47.22 seconds.
- Another runner up relay team in the 4x400: the team of Glode, Chloe Holowachuk (Smithfield, R.I.), Brianne Moss (Shrewsbury, Mass.), and Hannah Kimball (Atkinson, N.H.) took runner up to Dartmouth and just edged out UMass with a time of 4:01.94 to UMass' 4:01.97.
