Caron Scores Twice, 'Cats Ousted From AE Tourney With 4-3 Loss at #22 Stanford

Wildcats Battled Back from 2-0 and 3-2 Deficits in Quarterfinal Matchup
PALO ALTO, Calif. – Finn Caron (Hampton, N.H.) scored twice as the University of New Hampshire field hockey team erased 2-0 and 3-2 deficits, but 22nd-ranked Stanford University recorded a 4-3 victory in Thursday afternoon's America East quarterfinal game at Varsity Turf.
It was the first career multiple-goal game for Caron, who was named to the All-Conference Rookie Team on Wednesday night, and the four points also marked a personal best. Bloem van den Brekel (Eindhoven, Netherlands) scored UNH's other goal. Kelsey Rudert (North Grafton, Mass.) made two saves and Nicky Bajus (Lions Bay, British Columbia) was credited with a defensive save.
Corinne Zanolli scored twice for Stanford, and both Fenella Scutt and Jessica Welch tallied three assists. Kelsey Bing was credited with two saves.
UNH, the East Division No. 4 seed, entered the tourney with a three-game win streak and ends the year with a 6-12 record. Stanford, the top seed of the West Division improves to 14-5 and advances to play in a Nov. 3 semifinal against the winner of the University of Maine vs. Cal matchup.

GAME RECAP
- Stanford generated a corner two minutes into the game and capitalized to take a 1-0 lead at 2:34 on a direct shot by Zanolli.
- In the 15th minute, Caron's initial shot was stopped by Bing and then her second shot went wide of the cage.
- Stanford converted a UNH turnover into a goal and 2-0 lead at 26:31 when Emma Christus' shot from the top-right side sailed into the top-left corner.
- The home team generated another corner in the 30th minute, but Rudert denied Molly Redgrove to keep the margin at two goals.
- Stanford took a 2-0 lead into halftime with a 5-4 shot advantage and 2-0 edge in penalty corners.
- New Hampshire began the second half with possession and scored 20 seconds later to quickly trim the deficit to 2-1. Isabelle Danahy (Chelmsford, Mass.) carried the ball into the top of the circle and fired a shot that was deflected in front by Caron.
- The Wildcats converted a penalty corner into a goal and tie game, 2-2, at 40:39. The battery of senior captains Katie Audino (Severn, Md.) as the insert and Rachel Bossi (Chelmsford, Mass.) as the stick-stop set up the direct shot by van den Brekel into the right side of the cage.
- Stanford regained the lead, 3-2, at 49:58 on a direct corner as the battery of Jessica Welch and Fenella Scutt set up Corinne Zanolli, who blasted a low shot to the right side.
- The 'Cats responded with pressure and earned a corner in the 50th minute. van den Brekel's shot beat Bing but was stopped by Redgrove to preserve the one-goal lead.
- That proved to be only momentarily, however, as UNH was awarded another corner and tied the score 3-3 at 51:20. van den Brekel's initial shot from the top of the circle was blocked in the in the middle of the circle and trickled behind Bing, who came off the goal line. In the scrum 10 feet from the cage, Caron pushed the ball into the open cage.
- The Cardinal's fourth goal was a carbon copy of the third, although this time Redgrove was the goal scorer from the top of the circle on a drive into the right side of the cage. That tally gave Stanford a 4-3 lead at 62:24.
- New Hampshire called time out and lifted Rudert in favor of an extra field player with three minutes on the clock.
- Stanford had a quick counterattack in which Kennedy Schumacher got behind the defense, but Bajus raced back and dove to the right post with her stick extended in front to make the defensive save with 78 seconds remaining.
- The Cardinal earned a corner with under a minute to play and UNH goalie Rudert still on the sideline, but could not score.
- UNH attempted to quickly advance the ball upfield, but lost possession at midfield. Stanford sent the ball the other direction to secure the victory.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- The end of the 2018 season also marks the end of UNH field hockey careers for five seniors: Audino, Bossi, Rudert, Erin McNamara (Sanbornton, N.H.) and Rachel Thomson (Reading, Mass.).
- Caron (six) and van den Brekel (five) accounted for all 11 UNH shots.
- Bossi and van den Brekel were named to the America East All-Conference East Division Team on the eve of the tourney.
- Caron led UNH in goals (eight) and points (17). She recorded a point four of the last five games of the season with four goals and an assist for nine points in that span.
- van den Brekel ranked second in goals (seven) and points (16). She scored a goal four of the last five games with six goals in that span, including three in the regular-season finale vs. Dartmouth College.
- Bossi finished with a team-high seven assists and nine points.
- Danahy ended the season on a three-game point streak (1g, 2a).
- This was a rematch of the 2017 America East title game that was won by Stanford, 4-1. The Cardinal have won five straight vs. the Wildcats and have a 5-2 lifetime record against UNH.
- This was UNH's 24th appearance overall – 12th straight – in the America East tourney.
- Four of the last five games of the season ended in a one-goal differential; the Wildcats went 2-2 in those games and were 4-5 this season in games decided by one goal.
- New Hampshire played nine games against nationally-ranked teams and went 2-7.
