Gajewski Wins, Helps ’Cats Shatter Relay Mark

DURHAM, N.H. – Junior Danielle Gajewski (Danville, N.H.) won the 800 meter run and then came back to help the University of New Hampshire 4x800 relay team crush a meet record in the America East Outdoor Track & Field Championships that wrapped up on a sunny Sunday at the Reggie Atkins Track & Field Facility in in Wildcat Stadium.
The Wildcats piled up 140 points and finished runner-up to the University at Albany for the second straight season. Albany had 198 points and has won the last nine league titles.
The relay team ran the 4x800 in a time of 8 minutes, 47.16 seconds, shattering the old mark by more than 10 seconds. The old record of 8:57.80 was set by Stony Brook in 2011.
Sophomore Shannon Murdock (Exeter, N.H.), senior Cassie Kruse (Hampshire, Ill.), Gajewski and junior Elinor Purrier (Montgomery, Vt.) made up the record-breaking relay team.
Gajewski won the 800 in a time of 2 minutes, 8.58 seconds.
Gajewski and Purrier were the two Wildcats to grab America East individual titles on the weekend. Purrier won the steeplechase on Saturday for her second title in the event in the last three years. Purrier's winning time in the steeple was 9:56.15.
The UNH staff of Robert Hoppler, Casey Carroll and Dan Randlett was named America East Outdoor Track & Field staff of the year.

- Stony Brook was third with 129 points, UMass Lowell was fourth with 125, Binghamton was fifth with 90, Vermont sixth with 74, UMBC seventh with 57, Maine eighth with 39 and Hartford ninth with four.

- Murdock finished second in the 1500 meter run in 4:29.59.
- Kruse was fourth in the 1500 in 4:33.81.
- Senior Alex Giese (Franklin, Mass.) finished second in the 5000 in 17:15.39.
- Senior Amanda Szymanski (Londonderry, N.H. was fourth in the 5000 in 17:20.35.
- Sophomore Shelby Strickland (Kennebunk, Maine) was fourth in the high jump.
- Junior Jeannette Mara (Bedford, N.H.) and junior Tessa Artruc (Livonia, N.Y.) tied for fifth in the high jump.
- Freshman Koryn Joswiakowski (McDonald, Pa.) finished third in the triple jump at 38 feet, 7.50 inches. She was fifth in the long jump on Saturday.
