The No. 21/20 UNH football team received 1 of 14 at-large berths to the NCAA Division I FCS Championship to extend the national-best streak to 14 consecutive years.
Nineteenth-year head coach Sean McDonnell recorded his 150th career win when the Wildcats defeated Central Arkansas, 21-15, in the FCS second round on Dec. 2
New Hampshire enters the quarterfinals with a 9-4 overall record that includes 4-1 in non-conference games and 3-4 on the road (2-1 in non-conference road games).
South Dakota State is No. 6 in both national polls and the No. 5 seed of the FCS Championship. The Jackrabbits, who have won six consecutive games, are 10-2 overall and that includes 6-1 at home.
Saturday's NCAA quarterfinal game will be the first meeting between the UNH and SDSU football programs.
UNH has a 14-13 postseason record during the 14-year playoff streak. The Wildcats have advanced to the FCS quarterfinals three of the last five years (2013-14-17) and eight times since 2004. The 'Cats have a 2-6 record in the quarters but have won each of the last two – 2013 at Southeastern Louisiana (20-17) and 2014 vs. Chattanooga (35-30).
In its last three wins, New Hampshire has stopped a pair of eight-game win streaks and a 10-game win streak. The Wildcats put a halt to third-ranked Central Arkansas' double-digit win streak with a 21-15 victory in last Saturday's second-round game at Estes Stadium The Wildcats defeated No. 7 Elon, 16-6, at Wildcat Stadium on Nov. 11 to end the Phoenix' win streak at eight. UNH ended another eight-game win streak by defeating Central Connecticut State, 14-0, in the NCAA first round at Wildcat Stadium on Nov. 25.
Stats announced that UNH junior wide receiver Neil O'Connor is one of 25 finalists for the 2017 Walter Payton Award, which is presented annually to the top offensive player in the FCS.
Junior quarterback Trevor Knight was named recipient of the 2017 New England Football Writers Division I Season Gold Helmet Award on Nov. 26. The award is presented to the player in Division I – FBS and FCS combined – that is deemed to be the player of the year.
Four UNH players were named to the 2017 All-New England Division I Football Team that was announced Nov. 27. Jake Kennedy (OL), Trevor Knight (QB) and Neil O'Connor (WR) were selected on offense, and Rick Holt (DL) was the lone Wildcat representative on defense.
O'Connor was named to the CAA Football First Team Offense to highlight a total of six players who were honored by the conference on Nov. 21. Kennedy was voted to the Second Team Offense while sophomore linebacker Quinlen Dean and Holt were Second Team Defense selections. Knight was a Third Team Offense honoree and sophomore cornerback Prince Smith, Jr. was named Third Team Defense.
